TJS takes up the challenge of a new facility ? Australasia's Cleaning ...

Operations manager Gerard Bennett with one of TJS cleaners, Amy Han

By Lorraine Day

TJS Cleaning Services was appointed to clean one of the most advanced aquatic centres in the southern hemisphere ? the SA Aquatic and Leisure Centre in the southern Adelaide suburb of Marion. The facility, owned by the South Australian Government, covers a site of more than 10,000 square metres, and is managed by the YMCA.

Included in the complex is a 50 metre competition pool, a 55 metre water polo/diving pool, plus 1,000 square metres of leisure water including play equipment and water slides, a learn-to-swim pool and toddlers? pool. There is also seating for 4,500 people, a comprehensive health and fitness room with the latest cardio and resistance training equipment, sauna, cr?che and caf?, as well as a dedicated training room for elite swimmers and divers.

TJS Cleaning Services? operations manager, Gerard Bennett has swapped his passion of cleaning up opponents on the football field for a passion in ensuring a high standard of facility cleaning. A former Sydney Swans and Southern Adelaide Panthers player, three years ago Bennett relinquished his football career to concentrate on managing the Adelaide arm of TJS.
?
According to Bennett, the biggest challenge at the SA Aquatic Centre is cleaning during a major event. ?The Australian Age Swimming Championships were held the week before the centre officially opened, and the first week the centre opened to the public was school holidays,? he said, ?and it was mayhem!?

?We were involved in the initial phase of taking over from the builders, which enabled us to define the scope of the work, and determine when we could do day cleaning, before submitting our tender,? he goes on. ?We already had the contract for the Elizabeth Aquadome, so we had an established relationship with YMCA.?

?Because it is a government building there is a lot of scrutiny so we want to achieve the highest standard,? Bennett said. ?The centre is new, and everyone wants it to look new.?

Night cleaning involves four or five people for 15 to 20 hours while there are two day cleaning staff overlapping between 10am and 7pm. The centre is open daily from 5am to 10pm.

Because the tiles around the pool, locker room corridors and change rooms are non-slip design, they are high pressure cleaned once a week, which involves an extra six hours and two people. A recently installed hot water system has made this task a lot easier.

While the Aquatic Centre staff take care of cleaning the machines in the gym/fitness area, TJS staff cleans the glass and floors, as well as the change rooms, entrance foyer, office areas and cafe floors. The floors in the foyer, caf? and office areas have carpet tiles.

Bennett said the most challenging aspect of cleaning at the SA Aquatic Centre is maintaining the high standard in the change rooms and the tiled surface areas, especially during events, when there are about 4000 people in the grandstand, plus the athletes.

?When an event is on, we have a couple of cleaners check out the site before anyone comes in,? he explains. ?Then, during the event, we have four day cleaners continually monitoring the grandstand, toilets and change rooms. Also, between the morning and afternoon event heats, we do a full clean, so that basically everything is cleaned twice a day.?

SA Aquatic and Leisure Centre has also secured a number of national and international events including the 2011 Australian Short Course Swimming Championships, the 2012 World Life Saving Championships and the 2012 World Junior Diving Championships.

SA Aquatic?s facility and asset manager, Gordon Friend, formerly from the Adelaide Aquatic Centre in North Adelaide, said the new Marion centre covers a huge area and maintaining the tiles on the pool deck is a major challenge.?We are more than happy with TJS,? he said. ?If we notice anything that needs attention, they take care of it immediately; they are very responsive. As the interim cleaners, they cover all aspects of cleaning and waste disposal, including recycling. They?re doing a great job.?

Friend said there has been an additional challenge because of the air conditioning causing some environmental problems and surface deterioration. ?It is usual to have some teething problems with a new building,? he said, ?but this is being rectified.?

According to Friend, a two year cleaning contract for the SA Aquatic and Leisure Centre will shortly be put out to public tender.

Based in Sydney, TJS Cleaning Services began operating in Adelaide six years ago now, and cleans more than 80 sites in South Australia, many of them gyms and fitness centres. There are two managers employed in South Australia, an administration officer and more than 200 cleaning staff.

?We like to give clients the option to be as environmentally aware as possible,? Bennett said. ?However, not all products work as well in high traffic areas. We take precautions not to cross-contaminate and ensure we comply with all OH&S requirements regarding chemicals and safe operation of equipment. We also support recycling wherever possible.?

?It is important to look after staff and give them the right environment to work in, so they enjoy the relationship,? Bennett reveals.?Having a football background I think stands me in good stead to be a team player; to be able to listen to the staff.?

?Also, it is important to be responsive to short-term requests, whether it?s from the biggest or smallest client. It is great when we hear praise for our staff. There is no better advertising than word of mouth.? Bennett continues. ?We don?t turn a blind eye to criticism. We are the same as the people who work for us, and are prepared to listen to them ? we?re all on the same team.

?Both our senior managers have had their own cleaning businesses and understand the industry and what?s needed to achieve good outcomes.
It is important to communicate and use their experience and knowledge to give clients better service.?

Billionaire Falcone: no LightSquared bankruptcy (Reuters)

(Reuters) ? Hedge fund manager Philip Falcone is ruling out a bankruptcy filing for his telecom startup LightSquared Inc, one day after U.S. regulators said they planned to revoke approval for the company to build a national wireless broadband network.

"It is clearly not on our table," Falcone said in an email to Reuters on Wednesday when asked if LightSquared, the biggest investment in his Harbinger Capital Partners fund, was considering a bankruptcy filing.

He said there is a plan for dealing with the Federal Communications Commission's plan to rescind its permission for LightSquared to build out a land-based network, but he declined to offer any details.

LightSquared said the FCC's action had harmed it and the public by preventing construction of a network vital to U.S. competitiveness.

Industry analysts and some LightSquared investors say the telecom startup is running short of options with cash draining away and little chance of getting the FCC to change its mind. They also say it could be hard to find a buyer for LightSquared. Several suggested that a bankruptcy filing, while perhaps not imminent, is the likely outcome.

In a financial filing last year, LightSquared said it could run out of money by the middle of this year.

"A bankruptcy Chapter 11 filing seems inevitable," said a person with one of the hedge funds that owns some of LightSquared's more than $1 billion in outstanding debt. The person declined to be named because the situation is still fluid with LightSquared.

Tim Farrar, a veteran industry analyst and principal at TMF Associates, agreed but said a bankruptcy filing may not occur immediately. "Investors don't have leverage to force a filing right now," he said, adding that a final FCC ruling would strengthen the hand of investors to force it.

The FCC announced its decision late on Tuesday, minutes after the National Telecommunications and Information Administration said LightSquared's network would interfere with the Global Positioning System, vital to the military and with civilian uses ranging from airline navigation to irrigation.

Many telecommunication analysts have said it will be difficult for the financially-strapped company to either raise additional financing or ever become profitable with just the satellite-based portion of its network.

Its plan had been to build a high-speed wireless service so it could tap into the massive demand for data on devices like smartphones and tablet computers.

"We remain committed to finding a solution and believe that if all the parties have that same level of commitment, a solution can be found," LightSquared Chief Executive Sanjiv Ahuja said in a statement without tipping the company's next move.

HARBINGER SUFFERS

The fate of LightSquared also is critical investors in Falcone's hedge fund, which once controlled $26 billion in assets but is now down to about $4 billion. A little more than half of Harbinger's money is tied-up in LightSquared and the hedge fund is the company's single largest equity investor.

Last year, Harbinger, a fund known for its volatile returns with years of big losses often following year of big gains, gave up 47 percent of its value in large part because of a sharp markdown on the value of the LightSquared investment.

Falcone, an expert in distressed investing whose well-timed bet against the overheated housing market earned him a big following in the $2 trillion hedge fund industry, still has a prominent roster of investors. The list is said to include hedge fund legend George Soros, who declined to comment on the Falcone's current troubles.

For now, LightSquared's main business partner Sprint Nextel is sticking to its plan to give the company until the middle of next month to try and come up with a solution.

"We have an agreement with LightSquared that goes to March 15 to give LightSquared time to address the issues it's had with the FCC," Sprint spokesman Bill White said.

Sprint and LightSquared already decided at the end of last year to try and save money by shelving work on the network until the situation was clearer.

If Sprint scuttles the deal it could mean money coming back to LightSquared. "There is $65 million that would be returned to LightSquared to reflect work that was paid for (but) not carried out." White said.

LightSquared has argued that its network would help relieve a national wireless capacity shortage, in line with FCC goals to devote more airwaves to mobile services.

But the GPS interference and the FCC's subsequent decision may pose too great an obstacle to overcome, analysts said.

"While we could not commit to saying that it is the 'end of the road' for LightSquared, we believe it will be an extremely tough slog for the company to show value in the spectrum it holds," Wells Fargo analyst Jennifer Fritzsche wrote in a research note.

OPTIONS AND ALTERNATIVES

One route would be for LightSquared to consider suing the government if the FCC's final determination goes against the company after the comment period ends March 1.

"The odds are against (LightSquared) in being able to persuade the FCC that it is wrong," said Andrew Lipman, a partner who heads law firm Bingham McCutchen's telecommunications practice.

LightSquared would likely have to wait until the comment period is over before it could sue the FCC and such a case would likely take about nine months or more, the lawyer estimated.

Another way to deal with the GPS issues would be to arrange a spectrum swap with another carrier or company, a person close to LightSquared who is not authorized to speak publicly said.

A sale of LightSquared might also be possibility, one investor in Falcone's fund and other industry analysts have suggested, but they acknowledge that it might be tough to find a buyer.

"Right now (LightSquared is) in a world of hurt and the thing is it is toxic enough that no one wants to take it," said one telecommunications mergers and acquisitions expert who could not speak about the matter publicly.

This person added that companies like AT&T and Verizon have been interested in snapping up spectrum, but said buying LightSquared would not be a desirable way to do so, considering the complications around it.

The value of LightSquared's spectrum declines significantly if it cannot be used for cellular services, analysts have said.

For Falcone, the regulatory set-back is the latest in a string of problems dogging the 49-year old former Harvard hockey star who grew up in rural Minnesota but now lives on Manhattan's

Upper East Side in a townhouse once owned by Penthouse publisher Bob Guccione.

The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission recently warned Falcone and some of his key lieutentants they face questions over whether they might have engaged in improper trading. Falcone has also faced investor anger over having failed to tell them that he took a loan from the fund to pay his personal taxes at a time they could not get their money out.

College or Career: Smart Gen Z Choices | Business 2 Community

How often are you impressed by someone to the point you want to go the extra mile to make a difference in their life? That?s what happened when I met 21-year old Lauren of LN Accents at the WGN Studios in December. She was just 19 years old when she began LN Accents, which has already garnered media attention on Daily Candy, Seventeen Magazine, ABC and WGN. The most impressive attribute about Lauren? She chose college over her booming business because ?it provides more opportunities.?

Reality of personal branding

Lauren is a bright young lady that was on winter break from Syracuse University when we met in the green room at the WGN Studio. She was there for the second time being featured fo her LN Accents headbands and bracelets jewelry business in the ?Midday Fix? segment. This budding branding machine and fashionista wrote in to The Oprah Show at 16 to meet her icon, Marc Jacobs. The very next day she heard back, and a film, hair and makeup crew showed up to follow her journey and story from home to the HARPO studio where she met Marc Jacobs. There?s something about Lauren that inspires confidence in her brand and conveys an ?I?m going to be a major designer one day? mentality.

Syracuse today and success tomorrow

With successful entrepreneurs such as PayPal co-founder Peter Thiel setting up foundations to provide 6-figure seed money to college kids to drop out of college and start businesses, Lauren?s choice to pursue her education over jumping full on into the business world was inspirational. ?I enjoy working and do as much as I can to build my brand but have always thought about going to school because LN Accents has always been a side business. I learn so much in my classes about the skills I need to be successful in the future. If I just did headbands it wouldn?t open me to other opportunities? said Lauren.

Personal and business branding

Lauren?s Company name follows her own name: LN Accents for Lauren Nicole Accents and she spends her school breaks expanding the brand?s coverage and exposure. While Lauren is studying fashion, her twin sister (that?s right, she has a twin) studying PR and planning to attend law school. The hope is for her sister to manage the operational aspects of the business in the future, for now she does the modeling for Lauren who designs and sews each design. I had the pleasure of meeting both girls who make an impressive team.

Her advice for other Gen Z?ers

We all know there?s no superhero in real life, so how does a 21-year old run a successful fashion business, garner top media coverage and attend Syracuse full-time? Lauren says, ?I stay organized and set aside the time develop the designs and to always be networking with people. It?s important to keep in contact with media I?ve met in the past.? It?s important to always promote your personal brand because you get a lot of no?s and ?it doesn?t mean your brand (or product) isn?t good. It just means it?s not the right for them.?

If you?re looking for a great gift for a friend, colleague or want to pick up a new something nice for yourself, check out LN Accents at www.lnaccents.com or on Facebook.

Queen prepares to mark 60 years on throne (AP)

LONDON ? Queen Elizabeth II has braved the cold and snow to attend church on the eve of her Diamond Jubilee anniversary.

Bundled in a brown coat and matching fur hat, Elizabeth was joined by her husband, Prince Philip, at the service at West Newton Church on her Sandringham Estate in Norfolk on Sunday.

The 85-year-old monarch marks 60 years on the throne on Monday ? the anniversary will be marked by a series of regional, national and international events throughout 2012.

Elizabeth ascended the throne when her father, George VI, died on Feb. 6, 1952. She is the longest-serving monarch after Queen Victoria, who reigned for more than 63 years.

The Queen typically spends Feb. 6 privately but she has two official engagements scheduled for Monday.

Matt Trifiro of Desk.com: Meeting Customer ... - Small Business Trends

The Rolling Stones proudly sang, ?Time is on my side, yes it is.? These days, time seems to be an adversary that everyone is fighting, especially when it comes to social media and small business. Unlike large corporations, small businesses do not have the ability to hire teams of individuals to monitor and respond to customer service issues?on social media sites. So what?s a small business to do? Matt Trifiro joins Brent Leary to offer a solution.

* * * * *

Matt Trifiro of Desk.comSmall Business Trends: Can you tell us a little about your background?

Matt Trifiro: I have been a startup marketing person my entire life. I have been a co-founder and founder of a number of start-ups, and I joined cloud service provider, Assistly, at the end of 2010 to run their marketing team. Within nine months of my joining, they were acquired by Salesforce.com. Now we are a business unit of Salesforce.com and we are called Desk.com. I am the Sr. Vice President for Marketing at Desk.com.

Small Business Trends: Let?s talk a little bit about the speed and expectation around getting great customers experiences.

Matt Trifiro: Mobile has completely revolutionized our relationship to the Internet and similarly our relationship to companies. When I had a good or bad customer service experience, chances are, the device that is nearest me is going to be my mobile phone. The easiest thing to do was to Tweet, and I?ve done that.

With personal publishing systems like Twitter and the ability to contact thousands of people, if you are going to deliver great customer service you have to be connected to all of these high velocity channels 24/7.

Small Business Trends: How effective do you think small businesses are today being able to roll that out to their customer base?

Matt Trifiro: I think completely ineffective. The larger companies spin out a Facebook team, they spin out a Twitter team, they put two or three people on it, and they build it into their work flow and policies and eventually they build tools. Small business cannot afford to do that. It is hard enough to just learn what tool to use with Twitter. So I think that most small businesses are behind the curve in keeping up with their customers.

As a user it is really fairly simple. I just tweet. But as a small business, what would you do with that tweet? How do you assign it to somebody within your company to resolve the problem? How do you ensure that it does not fall through the cracks? When you don?t have a dedicated person on it, it is your job to answer every tweet. Small businesses cannot afford to do that so you really need to look to tools and automation solutions to help you address what is needed.

Small Business Trends: How does a small business prepare themselves to be able to handle the kind of service experience that customers really do expect today?

Matt Trifiro: You have to recognize your customers have different expectations. If you want to be competitive in this new world you have to go where they are. You will have to be there at hours when you are not normally expected to be, using technologies that you may not have ever used in the past.

The second thing you need to do is identify the tools that empower your organization to utilize those channels effectively without completely bringing you to your knees. If you cannot afford to hire a social media person, and an email person, and a customer service individual, you need to leverage technology in all aspects of your business.

Small Business Trends: How does it impact the overall organization in terms of service impacting sales or service impacting marketing?

Matt Trifiro: It is all becoming sales and marketing. If I was selling coffee at Starbucks, the most important thing to me is not that you bought a single cup of coffee, but that you come in every day and you order that triple latte with extra foam that is five bucks. Five dollars every day is a maximum amount of money over the course of the year.

When you look at a customers lifetime value perspective, customer service is almost more important than sales. It is where your revenue is coming from. A lot of customer service questions that happen in public social media are really sales questions and if your customer service team is empowered to respond to customers over social media, that becomes a sale. I think that it effects the entire organization.

Small Business Trends: What are some of the new things Desk.com offers?

Matt Trifiro: We have completely rebuilt our product to service the needs of small and medium size businesses. We have a new agent interface that is super easy to use and very easy to set up. You can attach Desk.com to a Twitter account and be servicing your customers over Twitter with literally five clicks.

You can attach a Facebook page in a similar number of clicks. You can attach an email account. All of the different channels that your customers demand service from are now organized in one place on our new agent interface. All of the interactions with the customers are stored at one place so that if multiple employees interact with the customer, they can see the entire history.

In addition, we have an entirely new mobile agent. A buyer who does some customer support but is on the road all the time now is able to interact with customers to provide support using any HTML5, Android or IOS mobile phone very simply and easily. That is new in Desk.com as well.

Small Business Trends: Where can people go to learn more about Desk. com and how it can help small businesses get up to speed with delivering the customer experience that they are really looking for today?

Matt Trifiro: Go to www.Desk.com. Every account gets their first full time agent for free. There should be no barrier, even to the smallest of companies to try it out.

Madonna launching video on billboards, online (AP)

LOS ANGELES ? Clear Channel is giving Madonna all its luvin'.

The radio giant announced plans Friday to premiere the 53-year-old pop star's new single "Give Me All Your Luvin'" and its music video across Clear Channel radio stations, electronic billboards and online venues. Clear Channel, which owns 850 stations nationwide, estimated the promotional campaign would reach more than 150 million people around the world.

Beginning on Friday morning, "Give Me All Your Luvin'" is scheduled to premiere simultaneously across 95 radio stations and on more than 1,600 digital billboards in the United States, France, Spain, Sweden, Norway, Singapore, Belgium, Finland and the United Kingdom, as well as on demand at iHeartRadio.com, Clear Channel's customized online radio service.

"This first-of-its-kind multimedia premiere with Madonna demonstrates the unequalled scope and strength of the entire Clear Channel platform ? a range and depth that enables us to work with the most talented and creative artists in the world to develop truly groundbreaking promotional opportunities," said Bob Pittman, CEO of Clear Channel, in a statement.

The Material Girl push is the latest multimedia endeavor from Clear Channel, which organized a two-day concert in Las Vegas last year that featured the likes of Jay-Z and Lady Gaga and announced last month that it was taking a minority stake in the production company of "American Idol" host Ryan Seacrest, who produces E!'s "Keeping Up with the Kardashians."

Madonna is expected to perform "Give Me All Your Luvin'" and three other tunes at her Super Bowl halftime performance Sunday in Indianapolis. Her new album "MDNA" is set to be released in March.

(AP) ? A 9-year-old Maine girl is home from a Boston hospital healthy, active and with high hopes ? and a new stomach, liver, spleen, small intestine, pancreas, and part of an esophagus to replace the ones that were being choked by a huge tumor.

It's believed to be the first-ever transplant of an esophagus and the largest number of organs transplanted at one time in New England.

Spunky and bright-eyed as she scampered around her family's farmhouse outside Portland, Alannah Shevenell said Thursday that she's glad to be feeling well again and able to go sledding, make a snowman, work on her scrapbooks and give her grandmother a little good-humored sass.

The best part, though? "Being home," she said. "Just being home."

It was 2008 when Alannah, then 5, began running a fever and losing weight while her belly swelled. Doctors discovered the tumor that year and twice attempted to remove it, as it made its way like octopus legs from organ to organ. But it was difficult to access what turned out to be a rare form of sarcoma, said Debi Skolas, Alannah's grandmother, and chemotherapy didn't do the trick, either.

All the time, the growth ? known as an inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor ? continued to grow in her abdomen, causing pain, making it hard to eat and swelling her up with fluid. Surgery was the last resort to save her life, and Alannah spent more than a year on a waiting list for the organs, said Dr. Heung Bae Kim, the lead surgeon on the procedure at Children's Hospital Boston.

The family was told there was a 50 percent chance Alannah wouldn't survive the procedure. But without it, she had no chance whatsoever.

Things were more tense than celebratory in October when doctors prepared to remove the growth and the organs in one fell swoop and replace them with organs transplanted in one tangled piece from another child of similar size.

The hardest part was taking out her organs and the tumor, Kim said, calling it a difficult operation with lots of blood loss.

"It's probably one of the most extensive tumor removals ever done," the surgeon said.

Dr. Allan Kirk, professor of surgery at Emory University in Atlanta and the editor-in-chief of The American Journal of Transplantation, said no other esophageal transplant has been reported in medical literature.

After the surgery, Alannah spent three more months at the hospital, with her grandmother sleeping every night in a lounge chair by her bed. She battled infections and complications from the surgery before finally being given the OK to leave.

She arrived back home Wednesday in the 192-year-old house on a country road where she lives with her grandmother and grandfather, Jamie Skolas, in Hollis, a town of 4,500 residents about 20 miles west of Portland.

But just because she's home doesn't mean she's out of the woods. Alannah has to take nine medications each day, some two, three or four times. Her grandparents have to precisely measure what goes in and comes out of her body, and check her blood sugar.

She has an ostomy pouch and feeding tube attached to her for nutrition as she slowly gets used to eating again. Scars from her surgeries look like a roadmap on her stomach. A tutor comes to the home 20 hours a week for her schooling.

Her immune system is so weak that she can't go to places with large numbers of other people, such as school, church or a mall. She can't eat raw vegetables or fruits unless they have thick skins because of concerns over germs, and she'll never be able to swim in a lake because of the bacteria. The Skolases installed ultraviolet lights in their heating ducts to kill mold, mildew and bacteria that might sicken Alannah.

Alannah is aware of her limitations and what she's been through. "Don't even ask," she says when the subject of the medical costs, which have been covered by MaineCare ? Maine's version of Medicaid ? come up.

She's talkative and enjoys bantering with her grandparents.

"Grammy, you're not always right," she said to end a conversation.

The Skolases, who took Alannah in several years ago but declined to discuss the whereabouts of her parents, have made sacrifices for her through the years. Their hand-crafted-furniture business has suffered, with Debi devoting her time to care for Alannah, and the couple has dipped into retirement savings to make ends meet.

Friends have organized a fundraiser to help raise money to offset the costs.

More than anything, though, the family is thankful for the girl's second chance at life and to the family that went through the pain of losing a child and before deciding to donate the organs to help Alannah.

"That was a courageous decision," Debi Skolas said. "I still cry when I think about it."

Waynesboro officers remember 'Mr. Ray,' reserve officer killed in ...

Thursday, Feb. 2, 2012

WAYNESBORO, Ga. -- The Waynesboro community is mourning the loss of a reserve police officer who was killed in a car accident Wednesday.

Deputies say 56-year-old Raymond Bosher pulled into the path of a logging truck on Highway 24 near Drone Road and collided with it. Bosher died at the scene.

He was a farmer, grandfather and humanitarian. Bosher, known as Mr. Ray' wore many hats during his lifetime, but his friends say he took the most pride in fighting crime.

"He's part of the reason our crime is down. He's part of the reason our citizens are safer," said Chief Alfonozo Williams as he flipped through department photos. "His generosity and his benevolence is to be envied by all. He was just a great guy."

As a reserve officer in charge of Waynesboro's Citizens on Patrol program, Mr. Ray made his mark in town driving around a white police transport van.

Assistant Chief Roosevelt Lodge said he had the "eyes of a hawk."

"He's the guy that drove around the white police van and always caught people," he said.

Major Mary Bennett said he liked the van more than the COP car.

"Because he said, 'That cop car is not made for people like me,'" she laughed, motioning a round stomach. "But the van -- that's a perfect fit. He loved that van, loved his van."

Bennett printed a certificate of appreciation just this week to give Bosher at their next staff meeting. Sadly, after the accident, she'll never be able to give it to him.

The department is now left with only memories of Bosher's service.

"He is a police man's police man. If there was blue in your blood -- he bled it. A true blue blood," he said.

Bosher served in the U.S. military, then at various law enforcement agencies near Charleston. He finished his career as chief of police in Springfield, S.C.

But even in retirement, Mr. Ray was always on duty.

"He patrolled the streets and called in any suspicious activity or behavior," Williams said.

One time, Williams added, the department was in crunch and couldn't afford ammunition for officer training. He says Mr. Ray bought all the ammunition himself so they could keep up their skills. Nearly everyone at the department had similar stories of generosity and service.

While Bosher was not killed in the line of duty, his death still hits hard for the local law enforcement community, especially in light of other officers killed in recent months.

He will be missed by many.

"I'll tell you, he just did so many things for Waynesboro Police Department, the Fire Department and Sheriff's Office -- and the local EMA. We're going to truly miss him," Bennett said.

Bosher's funeral arrangements are set. The viewing will be Friday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Joiner-Anderson-Saxon-Prescott Funeral Home on 6th Street in Waynesboro. The funeral is Saturday at 2 p.m.

Re-blockage rates low in both stented and surgically-opened arteries, study finds

ScienceDaily (Feb. 1, 2012) ? Opening blocked neck arteries with a metal stent or surgery were equally durable, in research presented at the American Stroke Association's International Stroke Conference 2012.

Two years after the procedures, less than 7 percent of patients had developed repeat blockages (restenosis), researchers said.

"Unlike bare metal stents placed in coronary arteries, where re-blockage occurs about 20 percent of the time, we found the re-blockage rates in the carotid artery were quite small," said Brajesh K. Lal, M.D., lead author of this analysis and associate professor of vascular surgery at the University of Maryland School of Medicine in Baltimore. "Patients and physicians can be reassured that both procedures are durable and that re-blockage rates are equivalent, so they can use different criteria to determine which procedure is right for a patient."

The study is the largest to look at restenosis rates after either procedure.

The study participants -- part of the Carotid Revascularization Endarterectomy versus Stenting Trial (CREST) -- had partial blockages in a neck artery. Symptomatic patients had experienced a non-disabling stroke or transient ischemic attack (mini-stroke) because of the blockage, while asymptomatic patients had not.

Previously, this head-to-head comparison of the two procedures showed no difference in the combined rates of stroke, heart attack or death between patients undergoing surgical removal of a blockage (carotid endarterectomy) or stenting.

About 10 percent of strokes are caused by blockages in the neck arteries, which supply blood to the brain. Revascularization procedures preserve blood flow and lower the risk of stroke.

In the current study, 1,086 patients received stenting and 1,105 endarterectomy. All were assessed at one, six, 12 and 24 months after the procedure with an ultrasound to identify those who had developed a 70 percent or greater blockage in the treated section.

After two years, the researchers found:

  • Identical rates of restenosis (5.8 percent) after stenting and endarterectomy.
  • Complete blockage (occlusion) in 0.3 percent after stenting and 0.5 percent after endarterectomy.
  • Combined restenosis/occlusion in 6 percent after stenting and 6.3 percent after endarterectomy.
  • Twenty stent patients and 23 endarterectomy patients had undergone a second procedure to open a re-blocked carotid.
  • Rates of restenosis were about double in women and patients with diabetes and abnormal lipid levels.
  • Stroke rates were 4 times higher in patients who developed a restenosis compared to those that did not develop a restenosis during follow-up.

"These may be groups we need to focus more on by monitoring them closely and aggressively controlling risk factors after the procedures," said Lal, who is also chief of vascular surgery at the Baltimore VA Medical Center in Maryland.

Physicians from different specialties perform revascularization procedures. In the study, results didn't differ by specialty.

"CREST was unique in having a built-in training and credentialing process that mandated participating physicians perform 1,500 revascularization procedures before randomizing any patients," Lal said. "These results provide hard data for the FDA and professional societies to use as they recommend a particular type or extent of training for performing these procedures."

Monitoring of CREST participants will continue through 10 years.
