news-goldie-puts-a-blame-on-communication - Big Brother Africa

Putting into consideration of what is happenning in the Goldezzo relationship,Goldie is still not settled with her situation with Prezzo and stresses the importance of communication in all relationships.

In her speach with Barbz in the garden, Goldie said though things had turned out the way they had between her and Prezzo, she blamed it on communication and that Prezzo is partly to blame.

It was evident to all that what the Nigerian singer and Kenyan rapper have or is it had, was more than just friendship but Prezzo dropped the ?we?re just friends? bomb at her.

For someone who was on the verge of inviting Biggie to his and Goldie?s wedding after the show, he couldn?t have been thinking they are just friends. However, Barbz told Goldie that Prezzo was worried about her and wanted to be sure she was fine before they could discuss their issue further and added that he looks to be caring to her regardless of hoe often they communicate.

Barbz told Goldie that ?He said he felt like you were drifting apart and that we were noticing it too,? She added that she hadn?t noticed any bad blood between them and was shocked to see Goldie breaking down the previous night. It seems that for Barbz wasn?t watching the big space between the two before the scandal!

I wonder if Prezzo and Goldie were/are just friends!!

Where do you see this relationship?s destiny??

'Games Of Thrones' Season 3 Cast List Revealed, Extended Finale

It seems fair to say that the second season of "Game of Thrones" has included some of the best hours of television that we've seen in recent years. Sure, I may be a bit biased, but last week's "Blackwater" was one of the most action-packed episodes of TV I've ever had the pleasure to watch. [...]

Can Online Relationships Be Authentic? ? Anna Renee is Still Talking

28 May

I?ve been thinking about relationships.? People and the relationships they?have with each other?make the world go round.? I know this is so?because?the Stylistics?and Angela Bofill told me.?? But there is a new twist in the spinning ? the Internets.? The WWW.? The Blogosphere.? We?are touching each other across time and space.? How amazing is that?? But is it really real?

How do you estimate your blog?relationships?? Do you consider them your friends?? Can we be in relationship with people we have no physical contact with???Can it be?a friendship if you?ve never seen the person in the flesh??? Or consider this: We have deep conversations with our blog friends, and often bare our hearts and souls to them.?? But how do we assess this openess?

1. Are we able to be more open with?each other?because we know we don?t have to relate face to face, (there is?a measure of?anonymity)?and?does?that lack of physicality ? that touching, seeing?realness make it less real in actuality?? Is there a falseness?in being?so open when you are anonymous?

2. Or are we able to be more open with?each other?because we don?t have the false barrier of?our physical being in the way, (the burden of dealing face to face),?and does that?makes the relationship more authentic??? Is there more reality in dealing with each other in spirit?

What does it all mean to YOU?????Help a?sister?understand the world a little better?by voting and commenting?? :D

Danica Patrick, Carl Edwards talk diet and fitness leading into ...

Carl Edwards speaks to reporters prior to the Sprint All Star Race (Matt Weaver/NASCAR Ranting and Raving)

The Coca-Cola 600 is NASCAR?s longest race. At 600 miles, Sunday night?s marathon is closer to an endurance race, designed to test the limits of both car and driver.

The teams have done their part, delivering cars that should withstand the rigors of 600 miles, but what about the drivers? The Coke 600 is unlike anything they experience all season long, especially for first time competitor Danica Patrick.

Patrick endured seven Indianapolis 500s during her tenure in the IndyCar Series but predicts that the 600 will test her like no other race has.

?For me, it?s just a matter of staying focused, staying positive, and staying hydrated,? Patrick said.

While mental health will play a role in determining the outcome of Sunday?s race, the Coca-Cola 600 requires a physical health and hygiene like no other race, a fact not lost on Patrick. Her season-long diet consists of egg whites, oatmeal and light sandwiches.

?During the race, I will have a drink mix that?s a blend of carbs and protein,? Patrick said. ?I managed okay in the 500 at Darlington last week, but it?s going to be a fair bit hotter. Hydration is going to be the most important element.?

Temperatures are expected to reach 86 degrees tonight placing an added emphasis on personal fitness. This plays right into the hands of Carl Edwards and Mark Martin, two of the most physically fit drivers in the garage.

Edwards has been featured on the cover of Health and Fitness Magazine while Martin is competing in Sprint Cup at age 55, both due to their extreme workout regimens. Edwards has a specialized training routine in preparation, led by his personal trainer, Dean Golich, and they aren?t telling.

?Dean?s given me some specifics instructions,? Edwards said. ?It?s going to be a hot, long, race and while I?m not going to tell you what I do, I am prepared for it.

?All of these races are tough and sometimes the ones you think are going to be tough aren?t as bad. There are some days you just don?t feel as good and some of my hardest races have been ones that I didn?t think were going to be that hard.?

Edwards did give away one secret ? try not to eat in the middle of the 600.

?They used to have a little snack box in my car, but I don?t do that anymore,? Edwards said. ?This race is one that maybe if you had something to eat in the middle of the race it would be good, but you?ve got to be careful about eating something when you?re under that much stress and you?ve got the belts tight and everything. I?ve learned that you?ve got to be careful about what you eat during a race, even if it seems really simple, so I just don?t eat.?

Shooting victim in serious condition

Associated Press Sports

updated 10:11 a.m. ET May 27, 2012

BUENOS AIRES, Argentina (AP) -At least one person was reported in serious condition Sunday with a bullet wound following the death of a 21-year-old man in a shootout between factions of a hooligan gang.

The state-run news agency Telam said the death occurred Saturday outside the stadium where a match between Argentine first-division clubs Lanus and All Boys was about to start. Lanus won the match 1-0.

Officials identified the dead man as 21-year-old Daniel Sosa.

Violence inside and outside stadiums has intensified in Argentina with at least five people dying this year in football-related violence, according to non-profit group Let's Save Football.

Raw Five-Point Preview: Big Show caught in a rage

Big Show knocks out John Cena

How many knockout punches can one man stand??Heading into Raw SuperShow, the biggest question mark surrounds John Cena and whether he'll bounce back from Big Show's mighty blows on two consecutive nights. But the WWE Universe should be keeping a close eye on some other big Superstars tonight, including World Heavyweight Champion Sheamus. Check out the five hottest topics for the Memorial Day edition of Raw.

1. How wide will Big Show's path of destruction get?
The last we saw of John Cena, he was laid out cold backstage following a stunning WMD from Big Show. The Cenation leader has taken some major punishment over the last couple of months, especially during his epic showdowns with The Rock and Brock Lesnar, but his match against Big Show at No Way Out could very well be his toughest battle of the year. Will Cena be able to fully recuperate and get payback on Big Show tonight??

The World's Largest (and angriest?) Athlete hasn't minced words about his new state of mind. He feels betrayed by the WWE Universe and other Superstars, believing that no one was there for him when he was fired. And with General Manager John Laurinaitis by his side, this might be the most frightening incarnation of Big Show that we have ever seen.

Learn Why Disabilities Don't Have To Stop You ... - Health - EzineMark

Many people all over the world suffer from disabilities and they become depressed and angry at the fact that they think they are limited when it comes to what they can achieve in life. There has long been a ridiculous and politically incorrect stereotype present that enables disabled people to feel less part of society and less likely to reach their life long dreams and targets. Some people assume that just because someone has a disability that they are incapable of learning and progressing in life, this is so untrue and it's offensive to have and hold these views, people with disabilities still have the ability to learn and evolve in life and they can do so very effectively in the right environment and with the right help. The stereotypes about disabilities needs to be extinguished as they are nothing but stereotypes, and they are stopping disabled people from progressing and achieving more in life.

All can be put right if people with disabilities show that they are able to reach their life goals and achieve them with ease through the right care and assistance.

There are many different types of disabilities people have and the achievements and targets that people want to succeed in will depend on the type of disability that person has. For some disabled people they realize and accept the fact that they may not ever be able to do certain things, and that they may not be able achieve certain results but instead of focusing on what they cannot achieve, why not show them a new direction on what they can. Each persons path in life is different no matter what your abilities are or talents, some people who are less able will achieve way more than those who in life through sheer determination and hunger. Too many people take for granted in life what they have and others don't and the only time they realize this is when they've met a disabled person trying to do something out of the ordinary, or they themselves succumb to any injury that causes them to have a disability.

So where are the right places for disabled people to learn how to achieve more in life and reach their full potentials? There are places for people who have Disabilities In Austin Texas where classes and carers show and teach people with disabilities how to move forward in life. Classes and individuals are taught in the perfect manner for them so that everything works and the student can understand lessons and put them into real life action. New skills, talents and trades can all be learnt through these classes as there's nothing that can't be achieved in life.

It's essential that you find the right disability center to learn from in Austin Texas as the environment, atmosphere and teachers themselves must resonate with you so that you can learn in the most effective and professional manner. Rid the stereotypes from the world about people with disabilities today and enroll yourself or the person intended into a disability teaching program.

Melani Robinson: Is He Toy Worthy? Looking for Mr. Goodvibe

According to a Dr. Oz national sex survey, 58 percent of people have purchased a sex aid. When I watched his show in 2010 with sex expert Dr. Laura Berman, they discussed the benefits that couples could have with the vibrator, the We-Vibe. I wanted to share that experience with the significant man in my life. Unfortunately, I didn't have one and so for a few minutes I'll admit that I watched the television and daydreamed about a mutually satisfying toy experience with the good doctor. Don't judge. He's a sexy beast.

A quick search and I learned he was married.

Damn you, Wikipedia.

In January I decided to put myself back on the dating roster. It had been five years since my husband died and I was finally ready to try again. I searched online for an honest narrative of Internet dating experiences from women close to my age -- especially those who were new to online dating. I wanted an ongoing dialogue, as if I were reading someone's journal or talking with a close friend over a glass of wine.

When I couldn't find it, I did it myself.

The blog chronicles my life in the romance trenches of the Big Apple -- what I'm experiencing during a year of online dating. A no-holds barred twice weekly report.

In the sexual version of Field of Dreams, "If you build it he will come," (nah, not going for the cheap pun on that one), I planned to buy the We-Vibe 3, the latest version of the first vibrator that can be worn inside the woman during intercourse. This amazing device will hit both of a woman's sweet spots and the man has added stimulation with the vibration he feels.

2012-05-25-20120523WeVibe3.jpg

A week ago, ready to purchase what I hoped would be a self-fulfilling prophecy, I took a field trip to Babeland, an adult toy store in SoHo. A sex educator, Pamela, schooled me on what was new in the toy market. Let's just say they're not your mama's magic wand (not that there's anything wrong with that). They were esthetically beautiful devices that look like a piece of sculpture -- something I'd comfortably leave on the nightstand even when my 80 year-old father visited.

Pamela concisely stated, "They're so beautiful a person can say, 'My sex life is very sophisticated.'"

She showed me the top sellers: Lelo-Gigi, Jimmy Jane-Form 2, and their No. 1,
We-Vibe 3. Babeland has all products on display for customers to hold and, um, feel.

No, not that way. Talk about awkward.

Visitors are encouraged to turn them on to get an idea of the varying levels of intensity. The biggest trend in sex toys is interactivity. Couples can enjoy the play together and many are remote controlled. Imagine the possibilities -- maybe even public ones. The We-Vibe 3 can be worn outside the bedroom and the house for that matter. Think of the fun one might have with their lover at, well, the grocer: the giver with the remote near the bananas the receiver near the oranges.

All of a sudden it's not such drudgery.

We might begin hearing a real life version of the legendary orgasm scene from When Harry Met Sally, except this time it won't be faking.

"I'll wear what she's wearing," may become the new mantra.

I'm not a big fan of reusing -- where certain things are concerned. Sure, I'll wash out my food storage bags, love the takeout plastic containers, but there's something a tad seedy about recycling the toys. And at around $140, the We-Vibe 3 is not the sort of item one buys in bulk like disposable razors. Not something I might whip out on a whim with Mr. Right Now, like the package of glow in the dark condoms I once bought for a laugh. I live in New York City where discretionary income is spent on frivolities like food and electricity. I need to be certain he's someone I want to see more than once in the morning.

Until it happens I'll look at it as sort of a tangible dream board. It will remain sealed in the original packaging on an eye-level shelf in the bedroom waiting much more patiently than I. Perhaps I'll even invest in another top seller -- one that is better designed for what I hope will only be a temporary solo life.

Asbestos News Roundup: 5.24.12 - Textile Worker Asbestos Exposure

May 24th, 2012. By LucyC

A roundup of recent asbestos-related news and information that you should be aware of. An ongoing list of reported asbestos hot spots in the US from the Asbestos News Roundup archive appears on our asbestos map.

Textile Worker Asbestos RiskAsbestosRoundupLogo1 Asbestos News Roundup: 5.24.12 Textile Worker Asbestos Exposure

Medical researchers at the University of Nebraska and Duke University have found an association between asbestos-related diseases and the incidence of lung cancer among people who work at asbestos textile mills.

The study, published this May in the journal Occupational and Environmental Medicine, tracked 6,100 workers employed at textile mills that used asbestos in South and North Carolina between 1954 and 1973. The employees? health and vital status were tracked. Using historical dust samples, the researchers also estimated the size of asbestos fibers which the workers were exposed in the mills.

The study showed that the textile workers who were exposed to asbestos fibers?no matter what the size or diameter?had an increased risk of developing lung cancer. Interestingly, the data showed that the risk of lung cancer increased with the length of the asbestos fibers, so the longer the fiber, the greater the risk for lung cancer. The study supports the hypothesis that asbestos-related lung cancer is associated most strongly with exposure to long, thin asbestos fibers. (Occupational and Environmental Medicine)

Asbestos Lawsuit

BNSF is facing an asbestos lawsuit brought by two former railroad employees who allege they developed asbestos-related disease from exposure to asbestos-containing products while working for the Railway. Both men have asbestos-related lung disease.

In their lawsuit, William Schleicher and Frank Cox accuse the railroad of negligence and failing to provide them a safe place to work, as required by federal law.

According to their attorney, Cox was a boilermaker and Schleicher a blacksmith. Their main exposures were at the West O Street yards. Schleicher was in a reclamation plant that salvaged materials, and Cox was in a heating plant. Schleicher started work in 1943 at age 16, and Cox in 1968. They are seeking a jury trial and damages.

BNSF spokeswoman Suann Lundsberg said: ?The claims filed are from former employees who have not worked for BNSF or one of its predecessor railroads for more than a decade. BNSF is currently reviewing the case and will respond through the legal process.? (journalstar.com)

Asbestos Settlement

Bridgeport, CT: A $2.4 million settlement has just been awarded in an asbestos lawsuit brought by the family of Hannibal ?Scottie? Saldibar, a tile setter from New Haven, who died after contracting an asbestos-related cancer.

Saldibar, who was 84 when he died, worked as a tile setter for 30 years. He passed away in January 2010, just nine months after being diagnosed with asbestos mesothelioma.

According to a report by the CT Post, a Superior Court jury deliberated about three hours Tuesday before finding the Tile Council of North America liable in Saldibar?s death, and awarding his family $1.6 million. Judge Dale Radcliffe then ordered the association to pay an additional $800,000 in punitive damages.

Although it is a trade association, Kenney said Tile Council of North America developed the asbestos-containing mortar used by tile setters for many years. (Ctpost.com)

Brightly colored bird bills indicate good health

ScienceDaily (May 24, 2012) ? The colour of a female bird's bill has an important biological purpose, according to new Queen's research.

Troy Murphy has found female bill colour reflects the health of the bird. Females with more colourful bills have higher antibody levels, indicating greater strength and the ability to fight off invaders.

"This is so exciting because it means a bird facing a rival with a colourful bill will be able to assess the rival's health and thus assess whether the rival will have lots of energy to invest in a fight," says Dr. Murphy, who conducted his research at the Queen's University Biological Station. "This information can then influence the decision to fight or flee -- and, if to flee, how fast it should flee."

The colour of a female bird's bill is strongly correlated with immunoglobulin antibodies, a component of the immune system in birds. Upon infection, these antibodies allow other immune cells to recognize the diseased cells and destroy them.

Dr. Murphy, who is currently an assistant professor (Biology) at Trinity University in Texas, also discovered there is no relation between immune capacity and male bill colour suggesting elaborately coloured bills have very sex-specific roles.

"Murphy's recent results add to a long tradition of bird behavioural ecology research at our biological station" says Station Director Stephen Lougheed. "Results like Dr. Murphy's clarify our understanding of how behaviour, colour and song are used in critical interactions among individuals, especially contests between members of the same sex and courtship between members of opposite sex."

The results of this research will be published in an upcoming issue of Physiological and Biochemical Zoology.

Gulf states bet billions on soaring airport demand

Gulf countries are channelling billions of dollars into airport expansions, betting on a sharp rise in passenger traffic and competing to strengthen their positions as regional hubs for global travel.

"We are trying to catch up with demand. We are not overspending," said Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al-Maktoum, the chairman of Dubai Airports and the emirate's fast-growing carrier Emirates Airlines, to justify the vast amounts being poured into the sector.

At the Airport Show in Dubai he reiterated plans to spend $7.8 billion under the group's Strategic Plan 2020, which should boost the capacity of Dubai International -- the Middle East busiest airport, from 60 million passengers to 90 million by 2018.

Between Dubai International and Al-Maktoum International, the emirate's second airport that is planned to be the world's largest and is yet to be used for passenger traffic, Dubai Airports expects to handle around 98.5 million passengers in 2020.

Dubai's airport passenger traffic more than doubled over seven years, from 24.8 million passenger in 2005 to to 50.1 million last year.

The airport is now ranked fourth globally in terms of international passenger traffic as it is mostly used for transit between the West and Asia and Australasia.

Paul Griffiths, the chief executive officer of Dubai Airports, said the group is focusing on completing concourse 3 that will increase capacity to 75 million passengers. The facility is purpose-built for the Airbus A380 superjumbo, for which Emirates is the largest single customer.

"Finishing concourse 3 is our priority. In the first quarter of 2013, it should be up and running," he told reporters.

The aviation sector now contributes 28 percent of Dubai's gross domestic product, or $22 billion.

Elsewhere in the oil-rich region, airports are being expanded, or new hubs being erected from scratch, to accommodate an increase in passenger traffic, mainly in Qatar and neighbouring Abu Dhabi.

Figures released at the Airport Show revealed that by 2015, the Dubai, Doha, and Abu Dhabi airports will reach a combined annual capacity of 190 million passengers.

The rise in air traffic comes as the International Air Transport Association (IATA) cut back 2012 profit forecast for the airline sector last month over fears of rising fuel prices due to tension in the Gulf, while it played down the impact of the European debt crisis.

A study showed that the region is now overcrowded, with current capacity utilisation in the Gulf Cooperation Council running at 115 percent and reaching 130 percent in Saudi Arabia.

Only the UAE has an excess capacity thanks to Dubai's investments.

Abu Dhabi airport, the home-base of the fast-growing Etihad Airways, saw the number of passengers more than double in six years from 5.3 million in 2006 to 12 million in 2011.

It currently has the capacity to handle 12.5 million passengers annually, but this should increase to 47 million when the Midfield Terminal Complex is completed in 2017.

Qatar is building a new airport, about four kilometres (2.5 miles) east of its existing airport which has been enlarged and refurbished to handle the increase in passengers as Qatar Airways keeps expanding its routes.

The $14.5-billion new airport is being built on a land half of which is reclaimed from the Gulf, and should have a capacity of 24 million passengers when the first phase is completed this year. This should reach around 50 million passengers when the project is fully completed in 2015.

Kuwait's old airport is also planned to go through a $6-billion expansion to nearly double its capacity to 13 million passengers in 2016, according to the head of the civil aviation directorate Fawaz al-Farah.

The emirate's Kuwait Airways and the no-frills privately-owned Jazeera Airways operate from Kuwait airport, which handled 8.5 million passengers last year.

"Kuwait applies an open-skies policy for air transport. This (expansion) is to meet the demands of regional and international routes," said Farah at the airport show.

Saudi Arabia, which occupies most of the Arabian Peninsula has announced plans to spend between $10 billion and $15 billion on building and upgrading its airports by 2020.

The capacity of Riyadh's King Khaled International Airport will be increased from 14 to 25 million passengers, while a new terminal being built at Jeddah's airport for $7.21 billion will expand capacity from 17 to 30 million passengers.

From the Writer's Desk: A before-and-after side-by-side look at how a story is made

In the series, ?From The Writer?s Desk,? I?ll describe what I do for a living as a writer and ideas I have for advancing my craft.

The stories you read often seem the sole work of the writer named in the byline. In reality, stories often go through many incarnations as part of a collaboration between the writer of a story and the editors who represent what their readers want and need.

Here I share with you the first and published versions of ?Herding Schrodinger?s Cats,? my first story for NOVA?s physics blog ?The Nature of Reality,? as well as my comments on revisions. Hopefully you?ll find them interesting.

I would recommend first reading my first version, then the published version, and then compare them side-by-side with my comments. ?The Nature of Reality? is very conversational in tone, so you will get to see how my voice as a writer gets revised to also fit the voice of the blog. Also, since this is my first piece for ?The Nature of Reality,? you will get to see how a story from a writer new to a publication can get revised to fit the storytelling needs of that publication.

Much thanks to PBS for allowing me the opportunity to do this!

Born to run barefoot? Some end up getting injured | barefoot ...

LOS ANGELES ? Swept by the barefoot running craze, ultramarathoner Ryan Carter ditched his sneakers for footwear that mimics the experience of striding unshod.

The first time he tried it two years ago, he ran a third of a mile on grass. Within three weeks of switching over, he was clocking six miles on the road.

In this photo taken April 19, Greg Farris takes a break while wearing a protective boot as he helps set up for a weekend triathlon event in Lakeland, Fla. Farris injured his foot while running in so-called barefoot running shoes.

JOHN RAOUX, AP

During a training run with a friend along a picturesque bike path near downtown Minneapolis, Carter suddenly stopped, unable to take another step. His right foot seared in pain.

"It was as though someone had taken a hammer and hit me with it," he recalled.

Carter persuaded his friend to run on without him. He hobbled home and rested his foot. When the throbbing became unbearable days later, he went to the doctor. The diagnosis: a stress fracture.

As more avid runners and casual athletes experiment with barefoot running, doctors say they are treating injuries ranging from pulled calf muscles to Achilles tendinitis to metatarsal stress fractures, mainly in people who ramped up too fast. In serious cases, they are laid up for several months.

Many converts were inspired by Christopher McDougall's 2009 best-seller "Born to Run," widely credited with sparking the barefoot running trend in the Western world. The book focuses on an Indian tribe in Mexico whose members run long distances without pain in little more than sandals.

While the ranks of people running barefoot or in "barefoot running shoes" have grown in recent years, they still represent the minority of runners. Some devotees swear they are less prone to injuries after kicking off their athletic shoes though there's no evidence that barefoot runners suffer fewer problems.

DIFFERENT MUSCLES USED

In some cases, foot specialists are noticing injuries arising from the switch to barefoot, which uses different muscles. Shod runners tend to have a longer stride and land on their heel, compared with barefoot runners, who are more likely to have a shorter stride and land on the middle of the foot or forefoot. Injuries can occur when people transition too fast and put too much pressure on their calf and foot muscles, or don't shorten their stride and end up landing on their heel with no padding.

Podiatrist Paul Langer used to see one or two barefoot running injuries a month at his Twin Cities Orthopedics practice in Minneapolis. Now he treats between three and four a week.

"Most just jumped in a little too enthusiastically," said Langer, an experienced runner and triathlete who trains in his barefoot running shoes part of the week.

Bob Baravarian, chief of podiatry at the UCLA Medical Center in Santa Monica, said he's seen "a fair number" of heel injuries and stress fractures among first-timers who are not used to the different forces of a forefoot strike.

"All of a sudden, the strain going through your foot is multiplied manifold" and problems occur when people don't ease into it, he said.

Running injuries are quite common. Thirty percent to 70 percent of runners suffer from repetitive stress injuries every year and experts can't agree on how to prevent them. Some runners with chronic problems have seized on barefoot running as an antidote, claiming it's more natural. Others have gone so far as to demonize sneakers for their injuries.

Pre-human ancestors have walked and run in bare feet for millions of years, often on rough surfaces, yet researchers surprisingly know very little about the science of barefoot running. The modern running shoe with its cushioned heel and stiff sole was not invented until the 1970s. And in parts of Africa and other places today, running barefoot is still a lifestyle.

The surging interest has researchers racing for answers. Does barefoot running result in fewer injuries? What kinds of runners will benefit most from switching over? What types of injuries do transitioning barefoot runners suffer and how can they prevent them?

While some runners completely lose the shoes, others opt for minimal coverage. The oxymoron "barefoot running shoes" is like a glove for the feet designed to protect from glass and other hazards on the ground. Superlight minimalist shoes are a cross between barefoot shoes and traditional sneakers ? there's little to no arch support and they're lower profile.

Greg Farris decided to try barefoot running to ease the pain on the outside of his knee, a problem commonly known as runner's knee. He was initially shoeless ? running minutes at a time and gently building up. After three months, he switched to barefoot running shoes after developing calluses.

Halfway through a 5K run in January, he felt his right foot go numb, but he pushed on and finished the race. He saw a doctor and got a steroid shot, but the pain would not quit. He went to see another doctor, who took an X-ray and told him he had a stress fracture.

Farris was in a foot cast for three months. He recently started running again ? in sneakers.

"I don't think my body is made to do it," he said, referring to barefoot running.

TAKE IT SLOW, EXPERTS SAY

Experts say people can successfully lose the laces. The key is to break in slowly. Start by walking around barefoot. Run no more than a quarter mile to a mile every other day in the first week. Gradually increase the distance. Stop if bones or joints hurt. It can take months to make the change.

"Don't go helter-skelter at the beginning," said Dr. Jeffrey Ross, an associate clinical professor of medicine at Baylor College of Medicine and chief of the Diabetic Foot Clinic at Ben Taub General Hospital in Houston.

A year and a half ago, Ross saw a steady stream ? three to six barefoot runners a week ? with various aches and pain. It has since leveled off to about one a month.

Ross doesn't know why. It's possible that fewer people are trying it or those baring their feet are doing a better job adapting to the new running style.

There's one group of runners who foot experts say should avoid barefoot running: People with decreased sensation in their feet, a problem common among diabetics, since they won't be able to know when they get injured.

Harvard evolutionary biologist Daniel Lieberman runs a lab devoted to studying the effects of running form on injury rates. He thinks form matters more than footwear or lack of ? don't overstride, have good posture and land gently.

In a 2010 study examining different running gaits, Lieberman and colleagues found that striking the ground heel first sends a shock up through the body, while barefoot runners tend to have a more springy step. Even so, more research is needed into whether barefoot running helps avoid injury.

"The long and the short of it is that we know very little about how to help all runners ? barefoot and shod ? prevent getting injured. Barefoot running is no panacea. Shoes aren't either," said Lieberman, who runs barefoot except during the New England winters.

Carter, the ultramarathoner, blames himself for his injury. Before he shed his shoes, he never had a problem that kept him off his feet for two months.

In April, he ran his fourth 100-mile race ? with shoes. Meanwhile, his pair of barefoot running shoes is collecting dust in the closet.

Film effects company DDMG plans Abu Dhabi studio

(AP) ? The American special effects company that brought the "Transformers" movies to life and recently wowed concertgoers with a performing hologram of late rapper Tupac Shakur is setting up a studio in oil-rich Abu Dhabi.

The deal signed Monday between Digital Domain Media Group and Abu Dhabi's government-backed twofour54 deepens the Emirati capital's ties to Hollywood as it accelerates its efforts to become a media hub.

Port St. Lucie, Fla.-based Digital Domain plans to establish an animation, visual effects and motion-capture studio and a media school in Abu Dhabi as part of the deal. The wealthy emirate is providing $100 million in grants for the project.

Although several movies have been filmed in the Middle East ? including last year's "Mission: Impossible ? Ghost Protocol," set partly in Dubai ? it is the first time an international studio is laying down such deep roots in the region, said Wayne Borg, twofour54's deputy CEO and chief operating officer.

"I think it's a real game changer for the region in terms of giving us a seat at the table," he said by phone from the Cannes Film Festival, where the deal was signed. "Historically we've never had the access and exposure to a company like that in the region."

Digital Domain expects to begin hiring immediately and start work at the studio by early next year. The aim is to produce animated feature films, visual effects and other content both for the region and for international productions.

Over time, it plans to employ about 500 people in Abu Dhabi. A 150,000 square foot (14,000 square meter) production center is slated to open in twofour54's main media campus by the end of 2015.

Borg doubts Abu Dhabi's conservative Islamic culture will influence Digital Domain's work in the region, saying the U.S. company will be producing "mainstream content ... for the international market."

Neither company disclosed how much Digital Domain is kicking in. But Digital Domain Chairman and CEO John Textor said in an interview his company would make "a material capital expenditure" to the project.

"Traveling around the world and collecting grants is not a business model," he said. "We're not going to Abu Dhabi just to say we've got our toe in the water," he added, saying the planned Gulf center could end up employing roughly as many people as its Florida headquarters.

Digital Domain has worked on more than 90 films, including "Titanic," ''TRON: Legacy," and "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button," where it digitally added decades to Brad Pitt's character. Filmmaker James Cameron helped found the company in 1993.

It recently made waves for producing an eerily lifelike hologram of late rapper Tupac Shakur that appeared to perform alongside Snoop Dogg at the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival in California.

It has studios in Los Angeles, San Francisco, Florida, Vancouver, Mumbai and London, and is setting up operations in Beijing.

Among its shareholders is Flag Holding, a little-known investment company in Abu Dhabi. Flag's managing partner, Ahmed Ali al-Sarkal, said the private equity house is about two years old and consists of a small group of unnamed fellow investors.

Abu Dhabi controls the bulk of the oil in the seven-member United Arab Emirates, OPEC's third-largest producer. It is investing hundreds of millions of dollars to carve out a niche in the global media industry.

It set up a company in 2008 to partially bankroll Hollywood films, and has wooed major media brands such as CNN, the Financial Times and Cartoon Network to set up operations in the emirate. Sky News Arabia, a new pan-Arab news channel, began broadcasting from Abu Dhabi last month.

The sheikdom now wants to entice more filmmakers to shoot there. It is launching a new program this week to offer producers a rebate of up to 30 percent of what they spend on making movies, television shows, commercials and music videos in the emirate.
