Redray 4K Cinema Player is ready to pre-order, $1,450 for high-res, high framerate home viewing

Redray 4K Cinema Player is ready to preorder, $1,450 for highres, framerate at home

We got a peek at Red's Redray 4K Cinema Player and Projector back in April at NAB, but now you can bring the player portion of it to your own home very soon. You'll need to bring your own 4K Ultra HD display (LG and Sony would be more than happy to provide one if you have $17k+ to spare), but for $1,450 you can pre-order a unit capable of native 4,096 × 2,160 or 3,840 x 2,160 video playback (in .RED file format) and upscaling. It connects to 4K displays via one HDMI 1.4 port or 4 HDMI 1.3 ports, with an additional HDMI jack needed to push 7.1 audio. It's even ready for the new high framerate 3D video that we'll see debut at theaters next week with The Hobbit.

To get content home Red is also launching its nationwide fiber-based Odemax.com over-the-top distribution network. Red co-owner Jarred Land calls it the "only comprehensive distribution solution for 4K," with built-in DRM, sales and analytics tools. He goes on to say that the Redray player will begin shipping at the end of December, with volume shipping promised in Q1 2013. A new RRencoder plugin for the Redcine-X viewer will launch in mid-December for converting external footage to the .RED format, and finally Odemax is scheduled to come online in January in time for the Sundance film festival.

Chilean Architecture

When an architect begins to design a house, he/she should put into consideration new ways of thinking since every situation is different varying with time, the place and the clients. The client's personality, social factors, new building technologies and the site characteristics can merge to come up with a new approach.

For example, In Chile, the process and time in which materials are selected in order to determine the design criteria clearly shows disparity in philosophy. Material selection in architectural design is a clear indication of its relationship with geography, its closeness to technological advancements and the scheme's budget.

With Chile's new societal openness and new economy, the country's architectural design experimentation has boomed. For architectures to find form in this country, some use recycled materials, others use particular materials that are of a standardized nature to cut down construction costs and others emulate local materials as their basis of coming up with a new architectural style.

One of these extraordinary works of architecture is by a German called Del sol. His hotel 'Remota' is made up of a grass roofing and his design founded on agricultural outbuildings . The furrows of the hillside and the stretched out rectangles barns act as a basis or rather points for reference. Remota references so much to the local landscape because of del sol's use of grass pastures to put together the roof. Just by the mere look of it, anybody would notice the extensive extent to which the hotel merges with the surroundings as it is displayed below.

Del sol's hotel Casa Granero's home is the other work of architecture worth examining in these Chilean south Lake District landscapes. This house's design has been borrowed greatly from the local agricultural building. The design uses local unfinished forest wood to m?lange with the surrounding forest. Casa Granero's home Lakeside house in Chile's region IX looks like a minuscule castle made of bricks with a stone front wall. However, this is only an overture to a very expansive structure made of glass that puts its inhabitants directly into the heart of nature.

Cristian's Lakeside house
This combination of stone, steel, concrete and glass in the right proportions is the work of architect Cristian Undurraga and Mario Marchant. Another extreme example in Chilean architecture is the copper-claud house built by Smijan Radic in Talca. This house is built on old materials as a way of discovering form. The house has modern boxes and lines in place instead of Del sol's adobe construction of his hotel explora Atacama. Smiljan specifically uses material as a foundation for the experimentation of design. Material can be chosen for philosophical, practical or aesthetic purposes.

Smiljan Radic's copper claud house
On addition to that, Eduardo Castillo's architectural design in Chile's lakeside district takes up the shape of the minuscule roadside shrines to the dead in South America found scattered across all rural roads. He wanted to infuse religion with architecture, in his quest, Eduardo adds magnifies sculptured structures of clay to full scale structures people can live in. Eduardo's shrine like design

NKorea preps rocket launch that would irk China

This Monday Nov. 26, 2012 satellite image provided by DigitalGlobe and annotated by the U.S.-Korea Institute at Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies shows the Sohae Satellite Launch Station in Cholsan County, North Pyongan Province, North Korea. According to analysis by SAIS, North Korea has moved two sections of a long-range rocket at the site in preparation for a launch that would alarm both its adversaries and lone ally China. SAIS says recent activity at the Sohae site suggests it could be ready to blast-off a three-stage rocket by the end of the first week in December. (AP Photo/DigitalGlobe via SAIS)

(AP) ? Satellite photos indicate North Korea has moved two sections of a long-range rocket in preparation for a launch that would alarm both its adversaries and lone ally China.

But North Korea has yet to announce its plans, leaving some uncertainty whether and when it will proceed with a launch that would be sure to draw international condemnation.

The U.S.-Korea Institute at Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies said Thursday the recent activity at the Sohae site on North Korea's northwest coast suggests it could be ready to launch a three-stage rocket by the end of the first week in December.

A commercial satellite photo taken Monday shows two long trailers, likely used to carry the first two stages of a rocket, according to an analysis written for 38 North, the institute's website. The trailers are parked near the main missile assembly building, where it says rocket stages would be checked before moving to the launch pad for takeoff about a half-mile away.

In April, North Korea fired a rocket from the same site in a failed attempt to launch a satellite into space, drawing U.N. censure as that technology can be easily converted into use for missiles. The launch dashed prospects for a resumption of international aid-for-disarmament talks.

South Korean officials confirmed Thursday there are signs of preparations at the rocket site. A launch in the next few weeks would be seen in Seoul as timed for South Korea's Dec. 19 presidential election.

Victor Cha, a former White House director of Asia policy, said Pyongyang has a track record of reacting to elections in both the U.S. and South Korea in provocative ways, most recently when President Barack Obama took office in 2009. North conducted a rocket and nuclear test within four months.

Another motivating factor for the North could be that South Korea recently won U.S. approval to expand its ballistic-missile range, and this week, was readying its own satellite launch. However, it scrapped those launch plans Thursday, citing technical problems.

North Korea conducted nuclear tests in 2006 and 2009, and Washington says Pyongyang uses long-range rocket launches to develop missiles that could target the United States, although it is not yet believed to have miniaturized a nuclear device to mount on a missile.

A rocket launch would not only dismay the U.S. and its allies, but the North's chief ally and source of economic support, China, which is midway through a leadership transition.

"If North Korea does carry out a launch, Beijing will not be happy," said Evans Revere, a former senior U.S. State Department official and expert on East Asia. "It flies in the face of China's request for North Korea to reduce tensions in the region and not escalate them."

Past launches have happened in spring or summer when weather conditions are better, but according to the analysis on the institute's website 38 North, there are several telltale signs that one is being readied now.

As well as the trailers, the images show empty tanks in four locations suggest fueling preparations. There's work under way at an instrumentation site that would monitor a launch. Also, temporary structures for keeping the snow off cars have been erected near a building used to house visiting VIPs.

But any launch could still be weeks away. The analysis notes that North Korea has yet to provide notification for international flight and shipping of splashdown zones for the used rocket stages, as it did before the April launch. Nor has it filed a plan for a frequency for a signal that would be emitted by a satellite.

David Wright, a physicist with the Union of Concerned Scientists, said the launch preparation so soon after the April failure "calls into question whether the North could have analyzed and fixed whatever went wrong." North Korea has yet to successfully test a rocket with a range of more than 800 miles.

Another failure would embarrass young North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, not yet a year in the job after the death of longtime ruler Kim Jong Il, his father.

Popslate launches iPhone 5 case with four-inch E Ink screen (video)

Popslate launches iPhone 5 case with fourinch E Ink screen

This is pretty darn cool. It's called Popslate -- an iPhone 5 case with a four-inch E Ink screen on the back -- and it's launching right now on Indiegogo for $79 in two colors. Combined with a bespoke social imaging app, it lets you take and share pics, then "pop" them to the back of your phone. Better yet, the always-on, ultra low-power, black and white display becomes a canvas for notifications, sports scores, maps, lists and notes, all just a glance away.

An open API allows third-party developers to design custom apps for Popslate -- including accelerometer support to interact with the backside screen by tapping on it. Imagine a micro e-reader app which uses the E Ink display instead of the main panel to conserve battery.

The company is still in the early stages of development and sadly didn't have a prototype to show us, but it's already gathered a team of talented designers, engineers and developers. It's also secured a partnership with E Ink to use the latest in ruggedized e-paper technology and is hoping to raise enough funds to make Popslate a reality. Two colors are available at launch (black and white) with prices starting at $79 for the first 500 supporters, then $99 and up. Hit the break for the demo video and IndieGogo link.

Scientists make wheat genetic code breakthrough

LONDON (Reuters) - Scientists from Britain, Germany and the United States have unlocked key components of the genetic code for wheat, helping to create varieties that are more productive and better able to cope with disease, drought and other crop stresses.

The identification of around 96,000 wheat genes, and insights into the links between them, comes just two years after UK researchers published the raw data of the wheat genome.

"Since 1980, the rate of increase in wheat yields has declined," said one of the project leaders, Keith Edwards of the University of Bristol.

"Analysis of the wheat genome sequence data provides a new and very powerful foundation for breeding future generations of wheat more quickly and more precisely, to help address this problem," he added.

The research was published in the journal Nature on Wednesday.

"Bread wheat is a complex hybrid, composed of the complete genomes of three closely related grasses. This makes it very complex and large; in total it is almost five times bigger than the human genome," said another of the project's leaders, Klaus Mayer of Helmholtz-Zentrum Munchen.

"Because of this, we took a novel approach to analyzing the data and we have been successful in turning it into an accessible and useful resource that will accelerate breeding and the discovery of varieties with improved performance - for example better disease resistance and stress tolerance."

Jan Dvorak of the University of California, Davis led the U.S. contribution to the project.

The study was welcomed by other scientists.

"As we struggle to confront the increasing challenges of population increase, land degradation and climate change that are contributing to food insecurity, it will be vital to understand the underlying genetics of staple crops like wheat," said Denis Murphy of the University of Glamorgan.

"The newly published wheat genome will be a vital resource for researchers and crop breeders across the world in their efforts to maintain global food supplies."

To get the best look at a person's face, look just below the eyes

ScienceDaily (Nov. 26, 2012) ? They say that the eyes are the windows to the soul. However, to get a real idea of what a person is up to, according to UC Santa Barbara researchers Miguel Eckstein and Matt Peterson, the best place to check is right below the eyes. Their findings are published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

"It's pretty fast, it's effortless -- we're not really aware of what we're doing," said Miguel Eckstein, professor of psychology in the Department of Psychological & Brain Sciences. Using an eye tracker and more than 100 photos of faces and participants, Eckstein and graduate research assistant Peterson followed the gaze of the experiment's participants to determine where they look in the first crucial moment of identifying a person's identity, gender, and emotional state.

"For the majority of people, the first place we look at is somewhere in the middle, just below the eyes," Eckstein said. One possible reason could be that we are trained from youth to look there, because it's polite in some cultures. Or, because it allows us to figure out where the person's attention is focused.

However, Peterson and Eckstein hypothesize that, despite the ever-so-brief -- 250 millisecond -- glance, the relatively featureless point of focus, and the fact that we're usually unaware that we're doing it, the brain is actually using sophisticated computations to plan an eye movement that ensures the highest accuracy in tasks that are evolutionarily important in determining flight, fight, or love at first sight.

"When you look at a scene, or at a person's face, you're not just using information right in front of you," said Peterson. The place where one's glance is aimed is the place that corresponds to the highest resolution in the eye -- the fovea, a slight depression in the retina at the back of the eye -- while regions surrounding the foveal area -- the periphery -- allow access to less spatial detail.

However, according to Peterson, at a conversational distance, faces tend to span a larger area of the visual field. There is information to be gleaned, not just from the face's eyes, but also from features like the nose or the mouth. But when participants were directed to try to determine the identity, gender, and emotion of people in the photos by looking elsewhere -- the forehead, the mouth, for instance -- they did not perform as well as they would have by looking close to the eyes.

Using a sophisticated algorithm, which mimics the varying spatial detail of human processing across the visual field and integrates all information to make decisions, allowed Peterson and Eckstein to predict what would be the best place within the faces to look for each of these perceptual tasks. They found that these predicted places varied moderately across tasks, and closely corresponded to where humans actually do look.

At least for the three important tasks investigated -- identity, emotion, and gender -- below the eyes is the optimal place to look, say the scientists, because it allows one to read information from as many features of the face as possible.

"What the visual system is adept at doing is taking all those pieces of information from your face and combining them in a statistical manner to make a judgment about whatever task you're doing," said Eckstein. The area around the eyes contains minute bits of important information, which require the high resolution processing close to the fovea, whereas features like the mouth are larger and can be read without a direct gaze.

The study shows that the ability to learn optimal rapid eye movement for evolutionarily important perceptual tasks is inherent in humans; however, say the scientists, it is not necessarily consistent behavior for everybody. Eckstein's lab is currently involved in studying a small subset of people who do not look just below the eyes to identify a person. Other researchers have shown that East Asians, for instance, tend look lower on the face when identifying a person's face.

The research by Peterson and Eckstein has resulted in sophisticated new algorithms to model optimal gaze patterns when looking at faces. The algorithms could potentially be used to provide insight into conditions like schizophrenia and autism, which are associated with uncommon gaze patterns, or prosopagnosia -- an inability to recognize someone by his or her face.

DrCredit Educates Consumers Regarding Personal Loans | Finance

(PRWEB) November 23, 2012

DrCredit, the online loan service, announced today that conventional personal loans are available online to help cash-strapped consumers in a tough economy. DrCredit, an online service that offers $ 500 to $ 5000 loans brought directly to the consumer through an online application process, can produce multiple online loan offers in a matter of hours.

In an economy of continued volatility and unemployment, many people are finding it harder to get the personal loans they need to get to the end of the month. Further more they say, large lending institutions are closing their doors on consumers who need help. This negative attitude is not aimed only at consumers but small businesses as well.

DrCredit believes consumers should get the level of service they want when they apply for a loan. According to DrCredit, Many personal loan plans are available to consumers who can name a reason they want a loan and match it against personal loans plans that looks inviting.

A personal loan serves long-term needs like home or auto repairs. Cash to take a much needed vacation is a perfectly understandable reason to apply. Most large institutions will not give out unsecured personal loans today without an astonishing interest rate and fees attached.

With new online applications, getting a personal loan is simple, according to DrCredit. There are fewer inconveniences in applying online. Applicants don?t have to drive to the bank. Applicants won?t have to get in line or wait in suspense for an answer or receive a check that they must cash before the money is in the hand.

Consumers must provide only a small amount of information on the DrCredit application and that speeds up the processing time, according to representatives. Personal loans represent hope for trying financial situations. DrCredit says the loans can be used for anything, utility bills, mortgage payment, school supplies or walking around money to get borrowers through payday.

The application form is simple to fill out. The DrCredit website questions for an applicant?s name, address and social security number. Applicants must verify income and provide a checking account number before the money can be deposited, and that?s as much information as applicants are questioned to provide. DrCredit considers a consumer?s application and loans money based on statements of income.

The Personal loan can be used for major buys like buying a car. A personal loan can finance that long-overdue vacation. Debt consolidation is a terrific reason to use personal loans. Sources say loans are simple to apply for today because of the Internet. With the level of today?s technology, shopping for personal loans has become painless.

The stakes in taking out a loan are high for both the borrower and the lender. The lender faces the reality that even the best credit rating does not guarantee a borrower will not default on a loan, and a borrower puts their credit score on the line whenever they take out a loan, according to DrCredit. A loan with collateral, like a home, makes the choice to lend to a borrower simpler.

DrCredit says borrowers do not have to place up collateral to qualify for a personal loan, but the bank would likely charge a high interest rate without the collateral. Lenders also offer bonuses and extra incentives to lure borrowers into financial agreements. A borrower would be wise to use common sense when applying for a personal loan. DrCredit says borrowers should measure future gain against small-term gain even from a terrible credit personal loan in order to make a smart choice.

Exxon shuts pipeline after offshore oil leak in Nigeria

By Joe Brock

ABUJA (Reuters) - Exxon (XOM) has shut a pipeline off the coast of Nigeria's Akwa Ibom state after an oil http://start.producersdesktop.yahoo.com:9999/v1/pdpane-22leak started by an unknown cause, the company's local unit said on Saturday.

The U.S. major's outage will add to production problems in Africa's biggest crude exporter, after fellow oil majors Shell (RDSA.L) and Eni (ENI.MI) reported recent disruptions at onshore sites due to Nigeria's worst flooding in 50 years.

"(Exxon Nigeria) confirms that on November 9 an oil release occurred offshore Akwa Ibom State," Mobil Producing Nigeria, a joint venture between Exxon and the state oil firm, said in an emailed statement.

"The source of the leak was identified and the pipeline was isolated and shutdown." The company said it was investigating the cause of the leak but didn't give any details on the amount of oil production lost.

There was an oil spill in August near an Exxon facility that residents said left a slick running for miles along the coastline of Akwa Ibom. Exxon said it cleared up the spill but didn't confirm the source of the leak.

Italian oil firm Eni said on Friday it had declared force majeure on Brass River oil loadings from Nigeria due to floods, which have submerged part of the southern oil-producing Niger Delta in recent weeks.

Flooding combined with oil theft, prompted Shell to declare force majeure on two other large Nigerian oil streams, Bonny Light and Forcados, in late October.

Oil spills are common in Nigeria's onshore Niger Delta due to widespread theft by oil gangs tapping into pipelines and the poor maintenance of some ageing infrastructure.

But offshore spills are less common. Last December, an accident at Shell's offshore Bonga facility spilled an estimated 40,000 barrels, one of the largest in Nigeria's history.

Nigerian regulators told parliament in July that Shell should be fined $5 billion for environmental damaged caused by the spill but the company has said there is no legal basis for the fine.

Retirement planning: How to fix a money-losing portfolio | Family ...

Situation: Despite sound savings history, investment returns have been low

Strategy: Sell high-fee, high-risk assets, buy shares that pay dividends

Solution: Retirement income sufficient to maintain lifestyle

In the business of managing communication networks, an Albertan we?ll call Edgar has been successful. He brings home $9,500 a month after tax. He worries about his retirement, even though he is far from a spendthrift. Edgar, divorced and his two children grown, saves almost $5,500 of his salary every month and has no expensive entertainment or hobbies sucking up his money.

The problem is that the $1.2-million in net financial and real estate assets he has accumulated is not giving him the return he would like to allow him to retire in two years when he turns 65. He is frustrated with low returns from his portfolio of high-fee mutual funds and unsuccessful bets on small-cap funds and resource plays.

My returns from my portfolio are disappointing. My dividends from the large caps are eaten up by management fees in the mutual funds.

?I have lost money in my small-cap resource stocks,? he says. ?My returns from my portfolio are disappointing. My dividends from the large caps are eaten up by management fees in the mutual funds. I am at a loss as to what to do in order to ensure that I have enough money to retire.?

He is already looking toward a little more luxury in the fairly modest life he has led to date. He would like one day to trade his 2008 Toyota Corolla for a mid-level Mercedes Benz.

In retirement, Edgar hopes to travel in Asia, where he can set down his easel and paint landscapes of rice paddies and mountains. The problem, however, is that his investments may not support such a lifestyle.

Family Finance asked Benoit Poliquin, a financial planner, portfolio manager and chartered financial analyst who heads Exponent Investment Management in Ottawa, to work with Edgar.

?The past 10 years have been the most disappointing period since the Great Depression. But we can do a lot to improve Edgar?s returns,? the planner says. ?His strength lies in his frugal ways. His risk is in the portfolio.?

Investment management

Edgar?s real estate holdings create complexity. He has a $131,000 mortgage on his $340,000 house and has just put $40,000 down on a new $400,000 investment condo to be built in a couple of years. Mr. Poliquin suggests Edgar?s best bet is to use his $500,000 in cash to discharge the present mortgage and the future debt when it becomes payable. His financial assets will shrink to $845,000 after he pays off the mortgages, but he should be able to clear $1,000 a month, or $12,000 a year, in rent from the condo. That will help form part of his future retirement income.

Edgar blames high management fees that eat up dividends from large-cap stocks in his blue-chip funds, picked with counsel from his roster of six advisors. He has large losses from his exposure to resource-sector flow-through shares, which pass tax benefits from exploration to the investors. High packaging fees tacked on by promoters drain returns. The result is money-losing investments.

There is an obvious need to restructure the portfolio to reduce risks. Edgar should sell volatile resource stocks and reallocate money to dividend-paying stocks and exchange-traded funds with shares that grow their dividends, the planner says.

He can also add a corporate bond ETF. He could expect 4% in dividends or bond income plus growth of capital from his $845,000 in financial assets remaining after paying off all debts.

The annual returns would be $33,800 before tax. He can also cut his management fees, which are up to $32,500 a year on his mutual funds. By using a fee-only advisor who would charge perhaps 1% a year, Edgar would cut management costs to $8,450.

Edgar is saving $64,560 a year in cash, RRSPs and his TFSA. In two years to retirement, he can add $129,000 to savings. That would push his financial assets to $974,000. At a 3% real return, this would produce pre-tax income of $29,200 before tax and a small charge for professional management of the funds saved in the past two years, should he choose to include the added funds in the managed pool.

Retirement plans

When Edgar retires at 65, he will get CPP of $11,740 and OAS of $6,540.? That plus rental income and investment income will give him $4,200 to spend each month after he pays 15% average income tax. That is more than enough to cover present expenses because he will not have to make mortgage payments and won?t have to save any more money for his retirement.

If he chooses to exhaust his capital by age 90 and his annual return after expenses is 3.0%, his annual investment income, including returns from two more years of savings, would rise to $59,640. Adding in rental income, OAS and CPP, he would have total annual pre-tax income of about $90,000 and monthly after-tax income of approximately $6,400.

He needs to cut costs and stabilize his investment income. If he does that that, he will be on track for a secure retirement

But Edgar would be vulnerable to the OAS clawback that takes 15% of income over $69,562 a year. The clawback would cost him $3,100 annually, or about $260 a month, leaving net after-tax monthly income at $6,140.

This is the income he will have without the Mercedes. If he chooses to spend some of surplus, perhaps two years? worth of cash savings that amount to $52,560 a year, he will have less investment capital and income in retirement. Even if he does trade up, he will have ample income to continue his present way of life.

?Edgar has been a diligent saver but not a proficient investor,? Mr. Poliquin says. ?He needs to cut costs and stabilize his investment income. If he does that that, he will be on track for a secure retirement.?

Four Strategies that Build Lasting Motivation (and How to Use Them to Achieve Your Goals)

Four Strategies that Build Lasting Motivation (and How to Use Them to Achieve Your Goals)When it comes to motivation?especially for health and fitness goals?being an "inny" or an "outy" can make all the difference. The "inny" I'm talking about is "intrinsic motivation," or a drive to achieve that comes from inside a person and isn't motivated by external rewards. This is the kind of motivation that can lead to life-changing improvements and well-being.

External rewards (like compliments, fitting into a smaller size, or winning a race) might get a person started but long-term motivation depends on a person's values and processes for achieving goals.

When it comes to health and wellness, internal motivation involves emphasizing current health and happiness instead of ideas about future health, fitness, and positive body image. In order to be sustained, exercise and healthy habits need to be relevant to a person's life today, not "off in the distance" goals. Vague warnings about future health are less motivating than the tangible, post-workout feeling of "Ahhh, I'm so relaxed right now. I need to do this again!"

This kind of current, internal drive might not come naturally to all of us, but the good news is it can be learned.

Self-Sabotaging Beliefs?The Challenge

Many people who don't work out regularly can rattle off a list of reasons why they're not motivated to exercise, from not understanding the benefits of activity to thoughts like "I'm too busy," "I'm embarrassed by how I look," "exercise is boring," and so on.

The folks who hold these (false) self-sabotaging beliefs often believe exercise doesn't matter; they don't enjoy it, or they simply have no interest in doing it. And, really, who could blame them? Who would be inspired to start a physical activity with negative thoughts running through their head? A person has to believe exercise is of value in order to build motivation to do it.

Building Sustainable Motivation?Four Strategies

In my experience working with families, athletes, fitness professionals and enthusiasts, and corporate executives and teams, I've learned there are four strategies people can use to create sustainable motivation: Self-Efficacy, FIT/Rational Thinking, SMARTER Goals, and Commitment Contracts. Let's walk through them one by one.

Self-Efficacy

A person with high self-efficacy believes in their ability to perform a task and achieve goals. Such a person might have thought patterns that look like this: "I'm sure of my ability to achieve the goals I set for myself;" "I believe that if I work hard, I'll be successful;" and "I can move in another direction to achieve my goal, if an obstacle blocks my my path." These beliefs are the strongest and most consistent predictors of exercise behavior. A person won't pick up a 35-pound dumbbell?or even a five-pound one?as long as they believe they can't. In contrast, the greater a person's self-efficacy, the more likely they are to stick with an exercise program and make it a habit for life. There are three ways to build self-efficacy:

Ensure early success. When first starting out, choose activities you're certain you can do successfully. If new to exercise, start with a fifteen-minute walk, one set of strength training exercises with a weight you can lift comfortably eight to ten times, or some gentle stretching. Similarly, if you're looking to take an exercise routine to the next level, start small?say, by adding three more reps to a lifting routine or a few minutes of high intensity interval training to a cardio session. Gradually up the intensity level as you're able, achieving more and more.

Watch others succeed in the activity you want to try. This is particularly effective if the person you're observing is similar to you?neighbors, friends, co-workers, and gym mates are all good options. Witnessing their successes can boost your own self-efficacy level.

Find a supportive voice. Personal trainers and coaches are skilled in giving appropriate encouragement, as are good friends (usually). Just be sure the feedback is realistic and focused on the progress you're making instead of comparing you to others.

Fundamentally Independent Thinking (FIT)/Rational Thinking

A fundamentally independent thinker understands that nothing makes a person upset, angry, or depressed; rather, what a person thinks about things determines how they feel. As Henry Ford once said, "If you think you can or you think you can't, you're right." There is no motivation without this important "inner game."

But people aren't necessarily born FIT thinkers. Instead, we have to learn to be rational even in the face of negative beliefs. Internal negative messages, or "Automatic Negative Thoughts", can act as obstacles to motivation and goal setting. Examples of destructive thinking include:

Feelings of inadequacy."Emotional reasoning" means if a person feels something, they automatically assume it must be fact ("I feel like a loser, so I must be one").

Predictions of failure. "Fortune telling" means a person makes predictions using FEAR, or False Evidence Accepted as Real ("I know I'll make a fool of myself in front of everyone in the gym when I try to lift weights, and I'll fail").

Mind-reading. A person assumes people are reacting negatively to them when there's no evidence for this assumption.

To oust these negative thoughts, ask the following types of questions:

What's the evidence for and against what I'm thinking?
What would I tell a friend in the same situation? If I wouldn't tell them what I've been telling myself, then why am I saying it to myself?
If a thought makes me feel bad or abandon a healthy lifestyle, then why don't I stop thinking it?

SMARTER Goal Setting

We can eliminate inconsistency from our health and wellness plans by making goals that are SMARTER (Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic, Timely, developed Enthusiastically, and attached to Rewards). Waking up in the morning and thinking, "I'm going to work out today," is less effective than coming up with a specific and actionable plan ("I'm going to the gym at 8:30, do 15 minutes on the treadmill at 4 mph at an incline of 10 percent, then do three sets of eight reps of barbell bench presses, etc. SMARTER goals take the guesswork out of health and wellness routines, so we're more likely to stick to them.

Commitment Contracts

It can be particularly difficult to sustain nutrition or exercise routines around the holidays. The field of Behavioral Economics offers some strategies to help harness both internal and external motivation. The idea is grounded in "commitment contracts," which are exactly what they sound like: A person commits to a behavioral change and then establishes a "contract" (with a partner, a friend, or through a website like Stikk.com) whereby some consequence (usually a monetary one) results from the person failing to achieve their goal. The idea is that the desire to avoid the consequence helps keep people more committed to success.

The Final Takeaway

Without an "inny," it's difficult?if not impossible?to develop lasting motivation. By believing in yourself, thinking rationally, setting SMARTER goals, and using commitment contracts, you're sure to cross into 2013 with enough motivation to tackle your New Year's resolutions with long-term success.

Environmental factors can mitigate genetic risk for developing alcohol problems

ScienceDaily (Nov. 8, 2012) ? Alcohol use during adolescence is harmful on multiple levels, including an increased risk for developing alcohol use disorders (AUDs) later in life. Recent research suggests that genetic influences are moderated by environmental factors. A new study of gene-environment interactions between a functional single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) of the ?-opioid receptor (OPRM1) gene (A118G) and the risk for developing an AUD during adolescence, with a specific focus on the influence of parenting practices or affiliation with deviant peers, has confirmed that environmental factors can moderate this association.

Results will be published in the February 2013 issue of Alcoholism: Clinical & Experimental Research and are currently available at Early View.

"The harmful effects of underage drinking are well documented," said Robert Miranda, associate professor in the department of psychiatry and human behavior at Brown University and corresponding author for the study. "They include injury-related death, suicide, victimization, academic failure and dropout, and possibly irreversible damage to the developing brain."

"Consuming alcohol during adolescence confers different health risks, some are similar to adults, others have particular significance for this stage of human development," said John F. Kelly, associate professor in psychiatry at Harvard Medical School, and associate director of Massachusetts General Hospital-Harvard Center for Addiction Medicine. "Alcohol harms can be caused directly, for instance by the action of alcohol on the body such as drinking a large amount resulting in overdose death, or indirectly, through psychological impairments associated with acute intoxication that lead to accidental injury such as car accidents, falls, drowning and so on. Because adolescents are typically inexperienced regarding the effects of alcohol, they are more likely to run into these kinds of problems. Furthermore, early exposure to alcohol during this developmental phase can dramatically influence the chances that someone will develop an alcohol use disorder."

"This SNP of the ?-opioid receptor (OPRM1) gene has received considerable attention among alcohol researchers over the past decade," said Miranda. "A number of adult studies suggest persons with a certain variant of this gene experience alcohol as more rewarding and show heightened risk for developing alcohol-related problems. We were interested in extending this work to adolescents."

The researchers recruited adolescents from the community via flyers and informational booths stationed at local recreational settings such as malls as well as high schools, leading to 104 adolescents with European ancestry (53 males, 51 females), ages 12-19 years. All participants were interviewed to ascertain AUD diagnoses, provided a DNA sample for genetic analyses, and completed measures of parental monitoring and deviant peer affiliation.

"The key finding of this study is that while genetics appear to play a role in the development of alcohol problems among teenagers, environmental factors can considerably reduce this risk," said Miranda. "The implication is that risk for the developing alcohol addiction is complex and involves interplay between genetic and environmental factors. It is important for future research to more fully elucidate the nature of this relationship and to develop intervention and prevention strategies that are personalized to the individual based on his or her unique liability and clinical profile."

Kelly agreed. "These findings add to a growing body of work that suggests genes are not destiny; rather, there are many things that we can do in the environment to offset genetic risk," he said. "This research has crucial social and public health implications because it addresses the intriguing issue of how something that we do have control over -- our environment -- can influence something that we do not have control over -- our genes. Importantly, this study suggests there are things that parents can do, like monitoring their child's social behavior more closely, and thus reduce risk for the development of a potentially devastating disorder."

"It is well-known that parenting practices and affiliation with deviant peers influence the risk of developing problems with alcohol during adolescence," said Miranda. "This study further highlights the importance of these malleable factors by showing greater parental monitoring and less affiliation with deviant peers can reduce genetic risk for developing alcohol use disorders."

"If you are a parent, pay closer attention to your child's whereabouts, and with whom your kids are affiliating socially, both of which can pay enormous dividends in reducing problems," added Kelly. "Beginning an open and ongoing conversation with your child along these lines, including discussing the nature of alcohol-specific risks, could eradicate a potentially devastating problem."
