Celebrating Those Who Help Small Businesses - NYTimes.com

I recently came across a photo on Facebook from the Pay It Forward movement. It was of a dry cleaner with a sign on the door that read, ?If You Are Unemployed and Have a Job Interview, Bring Us Your Suit and We Will Clean It for Free.? The photo struck an emotional chord in me. I believe it?s this very spirit that could help us work our way out of our economic mess. Americans helping Americans is what we need to succeed.

But when it comes to the world of small-business lending, I don?t see this spirit very often. Sometimes at Multifunding, we have to work with lending shops where there are dozens of employees in a room working to lend money to small businesses at annual percentages of 60 to 80 percent. The shops are backed by venture capitalists. Hedge funds lend them money, and they?re having a field day in the current economy. They say they are providing a service by making it easier for businesses to get financing, and they are ? but at a big price.

Other times, we hear stories of small-business owners who are the victims of unscrupulous loan brokers. They have paid $2,500 for a business plan they didn?t need, or they have paid for credit repair services even though their credit scores were above 700. Sometimes, that $2,500 is the last money they have.

The stories get tougher. Occasionally the workout groups at banks call us to try to help clients they no longer want find a new (and more expensive) lender. Many times these small-business owners take 18 percent interest loans in the hope that they will provide one last chance; often, the alternative is to just shut down the family business. The decisions are tough ? and very personal.

Two days ago a woman called from rural Alabama because she was trying to open a retail store. She had $8,000 she wanted to put down on the business and was hoping to borrow $100,000. Her plan was to buy a building for $65,000 and use the other $35,000 for working capital and to stock up on inventory. I sent her back to the drawing board and told her to find a place to rent, and then maybe think about buying a building once her store was up and running. I could tell she was shattered. I had about seven seconds to absorb her reaction before the phone rang with the next challenge.

The other day, however, was special. We hosted an event for Valley Green Bank in Philadelphia, which we gave an ?A? for small-business lending on our Banking Grades scorecard ? a grade that qualified Valley Green for one of our 2012 Small Business Bank Awards.

More than 2,500 banks have received an A grade on bankinggrades.com. The grade means the banks used at least 25 percent of their domestic deposits to make small-business loans. We picked Valley Green for our first awards ceremony because it is the A bank that is closest to our office and it is the largest bank in Philadelphia County to receive an A.

Several of the bank?s customers came to the ceremony and shared stories of the businesses they started with Valley Green?s help. The food co-op from up the street brought plums from local farmers. The new Hispanic radio station in Philadelphia was present. We had a high-end car parts wholesaler and a woman who had quit her job to provide business and operations support to her husband, an inventor. Everyone there had received a loan from the bank.

These weren?t the businesses with $20 million in revenue that the big banks like to call small businesses. These were true small businesses and entrepreneurs who have been fighting the fight since the Great Recession and have been able to do so, in part, because they were fortunate enough to find a lender who was willing to offer them reasonable rates. There was a true sense of community in the room as they shared horror stories, laughs, business cards and cake (see photo).

Americans helping Americans. I will hold onto this memory as we try to survive our endlessly depressing political season.

Ami Kassar founded MultiFunding, which is based near Philadelphia and helps small businesses find the right sources of financing for their companies.

Goal Setting, Self Improvement & Decision Making ? Words of ...

We know right from wrong, we know good from bad, so instinctively, all our decisions are made right away. It is when we begin to rationalize our decisions that we make the mistakes that we regret. Millionaires know the secrets to Goal Setting, Self Improvement & Decision Making, learn their Words of Wisdom:

? You will know you made the right decision because your body tells you it is the right decision, from the passion and the focus you get from making that decision.

? Choosing the right decision, opens the door to new options, once you have made that decision, the key to making that decision is sticking to it to make it right.

? Making a decision is a commitment to follow through because it truly brings out your own integrity.

? When you make a decision, you have to use your heart; you have to listen to your heart.

? Understanding you have to opportunity to make your own decisions is truly the key to success.

? Our inner strength and trust in our abilities to draw from all around and within to make decisions, actually provides the ability to make the decision.

? The ability to make a decision is leadership!

? We learn to make goals in our lives to attain success, the S.M.A.R.T. way to make goals in our lives is simple and goals must be: Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant and Timely.

? Decisions often fall back on the attainment of goals by others ahead of us; most of our decisions are based on positive examples of people who have succeeded from similar decisions.

? Successful people make up their minds quickly and change their minds slowly. Unsuccessful people make up their minds slowly and change their minds quickly.

? Indecision leads to procrastination and can reinforce negativity.

? As you grow in personal/self development, you no longer need proof of success; self doubt fades and confidence in your decisions takes over, this is liberation.

? ?You don?t have to get it right, you just have to get it going.? ? Mike Litman

? The decision process includes quiet and allowing, but taking too much time to make a decision limits your time to make more decisions.

? Making decisions allow ourselves to make more decisions, with liberation from not being afraid of what we are going to decide and that is what will truly lead us Beyond Freedom!

So what decisions have you made in your life?

Have you made more good decisions than bad decisions?

If you have historically made more good decisions than bad decisions then learn from the wisdom that suggests we make decisions quickly and change our minds slowly because by making more decisions there will be more good decisions made.

Goal setting, a focus on self improvement & quick decision making are keys to success, use these words of wisdom to unlock your possibilities today!

Because YOU Deserve Money!

Facebook Posts Solid Revenue Numbers, Stock Price Plummets

Shares of Facebook fell to their lowest level since its disastrous IPO, with investors wary of slowing growth for the social media giant.

Facebook is a wildly successful company with relatively little overhead and an established market presence that will be nearly impossible for competitors to challenge. But that doesn't necessarily mean that the company is a good investment. The reality for Facebook - and for its investors - is that the company may have already experienced its strongest growth periods. After all, when your website already boasts over 1 billion active users, there really isn't much room left for astronomical growth.

Facebook has been careful to try to ramp up its ad revenue slowly. The only real danger to the social network is the potential for it to alienate its loyal user base by forcing too many ads into their faces. And if some of its fledgling competitors see Facebook making missteps in that area, there could be problems that might snowball quickly. As it stands, however, Facebook is more than secure as the go-to social platform for users around the world. Maintaining that position will require nothing more than staying the course and being content with the status quo. Pushing too hard for more growth, however, could do significantly more harm than good.

Facebook opened trading on Friday at just under $24, which is more than $14 below its IPO price of $38. For those that bought early hoping for a Google-like ascent in share price, it is simply never going to happen. Facebook is a tremendously successful company that has already generated billions for its founders and early investors. But it is not likely to be a great stock market investment for the majority of investors. At least, not until the company establishes new revenue streams that are safe to implement among its loyal user base.

New York City goes green . . . sort of

In the heart of New York City, among the flash and dazzle of Times Square, there is one sign that is at once a boast and an unintentionally sad reminder of how far the city is from Mayor Michael Bloomberg's ambitious plan for a greener city.

On the billboard, right underneath the bold words "imagination is what drives us to change," is the announcement: "Times Square's only solar powered billboard."

In all honesty, it's a gimmick: America is not driving into a green world - at least not quite yet.

As the sign says, only one of the multitude of screens in Times Square is actually powered by solar energy - pointing out just how far off the dream of having a truly sustainable New York City, or United States for that matter, really is.

PlaNYC

In New York, at least, it's not because the issue hasn't been seriously addressed.

On Earth Day 2007, Bloomberg announced his ambitious PlaNYC for a greener New York, a plan that has since gained international praise as a model for sustainability.

"As a coastal city we're on the leading edge of some of the most dramatic effects of global warming. The science is there - we need to stop debating it and dealing with it," Bloomberg said at the launch event.

Bloomberg's PlaNYC is an effort to make room for a million new people by 2030 while reducing the city's carbon footprint. Since PlaNYC launched, 127 initiatives that creep into nearly every aspect of city life have been started.

New hybrid buses and taxis are making the city a greener place. Hundreds of miles of bike lanes have been added. White roofs that promise to conserve energy are being painted across the city; pedestrian plazas are pushing out cars in Times Square, the Flatiron District and Chelsea. New ferries have been deployed to the East River, connecting outlying boroughs with alternatives to the internal combustion engine. A half a million trees have been planted.

The city has also started an ambitious program of energy retrofits, which includes large skyscrapers like the historic Empire State Building.

"If we don't do anything aggressive, we're going to be dealing with the emissions that we're putting out today for a hundreds of years," Nathanael Greene, director of renewable energy policy at the National Resources Defense Council, told ABC News. "If we dramatically reduce our emissions are we can limit how high the peak emissions are, and what the extreme impacts are from those peak emissions."

One of the biggest successes of the plan has been its ability to combat soot pollution - a problem that kills more people than handguns do.

In order to tackle the problem PLANYC administrators looked at the data and realized that the tens of thousands of buildings in New York City create more soot than all the cars put together.

So administrators developed a project now under way, a collaboration between NGOs, the government, and the real estate industry to figure out how to run buildings on a different type of fuel. So far, 300 buildings have completed upgrades, another 1,000 are on track to complete this year, and 6,000 buildings by 2015.

Bloomberg has said he hopes this will put New York City on track to have the cleanest air of any major city in the world.

However, it's not as green as it could be. Several PlaNYC initiatives - and national initiatives for that matter - are falling far short of their goals. At the cornerstone of the plan is a pledge to cut emissions by 30 percent by 2030. The gorilla in the room remains achieving those emissions reductions.

While U.S. production of renewable energy has increased by more than 300 percent in the past decade, the energy supply for New York and the rest of the country is still dirty. New York is slightly better than the rest of the country, where half of all the power comes from coal, but the city is still highly carbon intensive, relying heavily on natural gas.

According to a new report from the NRDC, "the United States still lags far behind Europe and Indonesia and is only slightly ahead of Mexico in the percentage of electricity it gets from renewable sources."

Losing Ground

In New York City, lack of support for some green initiatives is evident.

A congestion pricing plan to charge $8 tolls for cars entering Manhattan during peak hours is dead. Budgets for improvements for subways, parks and other environmentally friendly infrastructure that could improve the sustainability of the city have been slashed. And many of the candidates expected to run to succeed Bloomberg in the next election seem poised to run against his green agenda.

Still, New York is doing better than most cities.

On a national level, Congress has pulled funds for mass transit and other vital projects, and comprehensive energy legislation is dead in the water. Many U.S. cities are falling short of emissions reduction goals. More than 100 cities across the country have signed up for the Mayors' Climate Initiative - of which PlanNYC is just one example - to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, but few are on track.

"The climate scientists still tell us we need to reduce our emissions by 80 percent from 1990 levels by 2050, which is a complicated way of saying a lot," Greene told ABC News. "By the end of the century we have to be at a carbon-free economy."

Will the US Lag Behind?

America had always been an innovator in the clean-tech arena, dating back to the Carter administration, when the gas crisis gave the United States a wake-up call. The federal government started funding innovation, and as a result much of the clean energy technology used today was invented in the United States.

From large-scale concentrated solar and high efficiency solar cells, to sustainable building practices, for years America was at the forefront of the clean tech race.

However, America remains the only country not to sign onto the Kyoto protocol, refuses to put a price on carbon and has failed to pass long-term legislation to promote renewable energy investments. The country is currently seeing its share of the clean tech market decline.

According to a recent report from the Center for American Progress, titled "America's Future Under 'Drill, Baby, Drill' ," "not only is advanced manufacturing and assembly done in other countries, which control the clean energy supply chains, but these countries are doing the cutting-edge innovation that we once considered one of America's strongest assets."

While at a local level, America "greens its cities," the lack of a clear national energy policy undermines these efforts, and the pace of sustainable development in many cases is not going as far as it should, Greene said.

"This is the typical story for the United States," Greene said. "We lead the world in energy technology innovation, energy business model innovation. Unfortunately, because we don't have a national energy policy, because we don't have a clear commitment to the end deployment of clean energy technologies, a lot of that technology is now being manufactured outside of this country."

Scientists Uncover Gene Variation Linked to Melanoma

SUNDAY, July 29 (HealthDay News) -- New gene mutations associated with the development of melanoma have been identified by scientists who conducted what is believed to be the largest DNA-sequencing study of the deadly disease to date.

Melanoma accounts for the vast majority of skin cancer deaths. The main cause of melanoma is excessive exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun.

The Yale Cancer Center team used DNA-sequencing technologies to analyze 147 melanomas originating on both sun-exposed and sun-shielded sites on patients' bodies. They found a large number of UV-induced mutations in sun-exposed melanomas, but most of these are "passenger" mutations that don't have a functional role in melanoma.

"We devised a mathematical model to sort out the relevant DNA alterations from over 25,000 total mutations," lead study author Michael Krauthammer, an associate professor of pathology, said in a Yale news release.

The researchers pinpointed a mutation in the RAC1 gene that speeds growth and movement in normal skin pigment cells, which are where melanoma begins. The mutation likely occurs at an early stage of melanoma development and promotes cancer cell growth and spread to other sites in the body, they said.

The RAC1 mutation was found in about 9 percent of melanomas from sun-exposed skin. It is the third-most frequent mutation after previously identified BRAF and NRAS mutations. Because the RAC1 mutation is so common, it would be worthwhile to develop treatments that target it, the researchers added.

They also identified mutations that disable proteins that suppress tumors.

The study was published online July 29 in the journal Nature Genetics.

In the United States, about 76,000 new cases of melanoma will be diagnosed this year and about 9,000 people will die of the disease, according to the American Cancer Society.

The Evolved aren't Undead. The Evolved are a very rare case where the E-Cell is genuinely compatible with them, rather than mutating into a Zombie.

I like this idea and would love to join the RP. I'm not sure if you have to, but if you do can I reserve a survivor please? I'm not sure whether or not I'll be able to post my character today or not but I'll try later tonight. If I can't it'll be tomorrow (my timezone - GMT).

I should go.

You don't have to reserve a survivor, they are the default character type of this roleplay. The Evolved are the only ones that need to be reserved. Thanks for the support guys.

NSA chief: Internet 'at great risk,' needs defense system

3 hrs.

General Keith Alexander, head of the National Security Agency, addressed an audience at the Defcon hacking conference in Las Vegas Friday, saying the Internet needed fundamental defenses against foreign incursion.

It's the first time an NSA official has spoken at the world-famous conference, where the attendees are often engaged in unquestionably illegal activities like attempting to breach the security of government agencies. But General Alexander seemed to regard them as kindred spirits as well as experts.

"Sometimes you guys get a bad rap. From my perspective, what you're doing to figure out vulnerabilities in systems is great," he told the crowd, according to a report from CNET.

But it wasn't all civilities. Alexander said that the Internet as it is today is "at great risk from exploitation, disruption and destruction." Tracking Internet activity is a massive task and even the NSA can't do it without some kind of fundamental access.

He compared the Internet's traffic to a toll?highway, and said he'd like the NSA to act as the monitor. Most traffic would barely be paid attention to, like a car with an "EZ Pass" cruising through without being stopped. But suspicious traffic would be identified and tracked.

As MIT's Technology Review points out, NSA has prototyped a version of an Internet monitoring system, with 17 defense contractors participating. If an internal alarm is tripped, presumably in the event of a breach, telemetry from the event is relayed automatically to the NSA. Alexander would like to see something like this applied more broadly.

Naturally an audience of hackers would be skeptical of giving a government agency such broad access to all the U.S.'s Internet traffic, but Alexander assured them that their interest was strictly to investigate threats from abroad. "Our job is foreign intelligence. We get oversight by Congress," he said, also taking time to say that recent reports that the NSA had a file on every American citizen were "absolute nonsense."

He also exhorted the audience of technically proficient hackers to get involved. With a tacit nod to the bumbling efforts of some legislators in regulating the Internet and security issues, he suggested that the Defcon attendees should be helping from the inside, not just taking pot shots at it from outside.

General Alexander is head of perhaps the largest and most invasive intelligence and security agency in the world, and whether it's?despite that or because of that, his overtures to the hacking community seem reasonable. He and the occasionally lawless?hackers may in some ways seem to be natural enemies, but?as one hacker told MIT, when it comes to advancing the field of cybersecurity, "Our interests overlap."

Indian Destinations are Paradise for Enjoying Monsoon | travel sercity

If you?re going to be a sissy about the rainfall, you?re losing out on a whole other amazing side of India

When it?s here we are at summer time season monsoon in India, visitors vacant out. That?s time to get in.

India during summer time season stormy period between May and Sept seems like a whole other place.

After months of hot, wet air from the Indian Sea ruining across the country, building extreme conditions, individuals get annoying and tired in the oppressive heat. They can?t wait for the air to open for the downpours.

When the monsoon finally comes, it is a welcome and huge vision.

If you are near the sea, you can watch the monsoon approach over the water.

First, a intense wind strikes up. The sky and the sea turn different colors of blue and grayish. Atmosphere throws quickly across the air. An expecting shushes drops.

Then the weather jolts. People can be seen moving on the roads, looks turned towards the sky, hands outstretched, enacting their own personal Bollywood rainfall landscape.

The monsoon in India is considered to detoxify the earth and its individuals. It is also key to India?s farming economic climate, enhancing the growth of plants and driving stock markets.

Apart from reducing conditions, the monsoon also decreases room rates for visitors, turning India into a great off-season location.

You?ve just got to withstand getting a tiny bit wet.

?

Weather out impurities

?

Ayurveda professionals say the monsoon in Indian is the best time for therapies. Rain helps in providing stability returning to our bodies.

Monsoon therapy is the fastest-growing section in wellness travel and leisure, particularly in Kerala, the property of ayurveda. Herbs and healing vegetation blossom during the monsoon period.

Small Business Networking: Overcoming Additional Client Objections

Methane measurements at low level flight: Detection of the greenhouse gas methane in the Arctic

ScienceDaily (July 26, 2012) ? A team of scientists from the Alfred Wegener Institute for Polar and Marine Research in the Helmholtz Association (AWI) and the GFZ German Research Centre for Geosciences has just completed an airborne measurement campaign that allowed for the first time to measure large-scale methane emissions from the extensive Arctic permafrost landscapes. The study area extended from Barrow, the northernmost settlement on the American mainland, across the entire North Slope of Alaska, to the Mackenzie Delta in the Northwest Territories of Canada.

The airborne measurements (Airborne Measurement of Methane -- AIRMETH) at a flight level of only 30 to 50 meters above ground addresses two major questions: How much methane is emitted from permafrost areas into the atmosphere? Do well known geological point sources, i.e. the leakage of gas along geologic faults, contribute significantly to the total amount or does the microbially produced methane from the upper soil layers dominate?

"First of all, with these measurements we can quantify the current emis-sions and establish baseline data. On this basis, potential future climate-related changes can be determined. In addition, our data will help to better understand the still incompletely explored carbon cycle in the Arctic," said the GFZ scientist Torsten Sachs, head of the campaign.

In order to clarify the exact relationship between older geogenic and younger biogenic methane, isotope analysis would be required. In the Mackenzie Delta, however, the location of some geological sources is well known, so that selective measurements in the immediate surroundings allow conclusions about their contribution to the total emissions. In 2002, the GFZ was already involved here in a scientific drilling program for methane hydrate research. Covered by a 600 meter thick permafrost layer, this region stores unusually highly enriched methane hydrate reservoirs. These are currently considered the world's most significant accumulations under permafrost conditions.

The research aircraft Polar 5 of the Alfred Wegener Institute served as platform for the measurements. The machine of type Basler BT-67 was fitted with a meteorological nose boom, which includes a 5-hole probe to determine the 3D wind vector and temperature and humidity sensors. Via an intake on the roof of the airplane, air was also sucked into the cabin and examined with a fast methane analyser.

An initial screening of the results showed the need for the aircraft for the vast tundra areas: "By using the plane we have measured considerable regional differences in the methane concentration. This finding is new and important: on the one hand because the point measurements on ground stations have not yielded a very detailed and representative picture of the region. On the other hand because it showed that with the airborne measurements, we can close a data gap between the ground measurements and the available satellite data," says atmospheric researcher Dr. Joerg Hartmann from the Alfred Wegener Institute.

In a next step, the data will be analyzed in detail and the detected atmospheric flow processes will be integrated in computer models. The Alfred Wegener Institute is one of the world's leading science institutions in terms of permafrost and atmospheric research. Its scientists work both in the Russian tundra, on Svalbard and in the northern regions of Canada and the United States. As the national research centre for geosciences, the GFZ explores "System Earth" worldwide, with the geological, physical, chemical and biological processes that occur in Earth's interior and on the surface. Both research institutions are Helmholtz centres.

Redskins hopeful with RGIII after lean years

ASHBURN, Va. (AP) ? Rookie quarterback Robert Griffin III generated excitement among the veterans at the opening of Redskins camp on Thursday.

Only six current players made the playoffs with Washington and only two have won a postseason game for the franchise. The team was just 11-21 during coach Mike Shanahan's first two seasons.

The 2011 Heisman Trophy winner landed in Washington in a trade that sent three first-round picks and a second-round selection to St. Louis. Shanahan named him the starter before the veterans reported in May, and the old-timers seem pleased to have the 22-year-old Griffin at the helm.

"There's definitely a different feeling about this team," said 37-year-old linebacker London Fletcher, who won a Super Bowl and two NFC titles with the Rams. "We know it's going to be a process. We're not going to expect (Robert) to be a top-five quarterback (right away).

"He has a lot of notoriety and deservedly so because of what he accomplished at Baylor. He doesn't carry himself like I'm a Heisman winner, they traded all these picks for me, I'm better than you guys. So it's easy for guys to gravitate towards him for his demeanor."

Two-time Pro Bowl tight end Chris Cooley couldn't be more impressed with Griffin, who invited his pass-catchers to spend a couple of days with him in Waco, Texas, during the six weeks between the end of spring workouts and the start of camp.

"No one treats him like a rookie," Cooley said. "You can't. He's the starter for us. You have to treat him like a starting quarterback. There's nothing that he does that says, 'We should haze you.' He's been a real professional since the day he walked through the door.

"I'm amazed every day by the way he handles it, his ability to run this offense. He's done a fantastic job. I can't imagine being suited more for the position he's in."

Running back Tim Hightower, part of a Super Bowl team in Arizona with quarterback Kurt Warner four years ago, likes what he sees from Griffin. But he doesn't want the rookie to feel compelled to try to singlehandedly turn around the Redskins.

"He has a lot of expectations on him," Hightower said. "As teammates, it's our responsibility to rise to the occasion, help his transition, take some of that focus, some of that pressure off him.

"We're going to go as he goes."

Griffin, who competed in the hurdles in 2008 Olympic trials, can certainly go on the field. As a senior at Baylor, Griffin led the Bears to an Alamo Bowl victory while passing for 4,293 yards and 37 touchdowns and running for 699 yards and 10 scores.

Fletcher compared Griffin to Philadelphia's dual threat quarterback Michael Vick. He said the rookie's speed will "shock" opposing defense especially when combined with his "rocket" arm.

"He can make every throw, use his legs to extend a play," Redskins three-time Pro Bowl cornerback DeAngelo Hall said. "You feel like, 'We got him,' and the play's still going on. He brings that dynamic to the game, and we hate that as defensive players.

"I guess it all starts at quarterback. That's what everybody always says. We finally got one that we feel like can hold his own against some of these other guys in the league.

"We got a chance to compete."

Notes: Starting right tackle Jammal Brown was a surprising addition to Washington's physically-unable-to-perform list. Coach Mike Shanahan said that Brown aggravated his long-ailing left hip while running sprints Wednesday. Brown, 31, who was chosen for two Pro Bowls while with New Orleans, missed the 2009 season with the Saints after having surgery. He missed five games the past two seasons with hip and groin ailments. Shanahan said he doesn't know when Brown might return. Tyler Polumbus, who started two games in Brown's place last season, worked with the starters Thursday. ... FS Tanard Jackson (calf), who was signed from Tampa Bay, is also on the PUP list. Fellow free agent pickup Madieu Williams worked with the starters on Thursday, but Shanahan said that Jackson could be back as soon as Saturday. ... Running back Tristan Davis (knee) is also on the PUP. Hightower, the starting running back before he suffered a season-ending injury in Week 7, is being worked back into duty gradually but ran well on Thursday. ... Rookie cornerback Chase Minnifield, who tore an ACL on the last day of minicamp, was placed on the reserve/injured list.
