FORT WALTON BEACH ? A little bit of New Orleans comes to Okaloosa Island only once a year, and this year?s Abita Mardi Gras Parade on Okaloosa Island will have just a bit more Cajun spirit than usual.
Abita Brewing Co., a Louisiana favorite, is the sponsor of this year?s 10th anniversary celebration of the island?s festive and family-friendly parade at 11 a.m. Saturday.
The parade starts near the El Matador on the far western edge of Santa Rosa Boulevard and then moves eastward, ending at Old Bay Steamer. However, floats will then turn left and travel under the bridge to wind up in the Emerald Coast Convention Center parking lot.
?We?re so excited about Abita?s involvement this year, because we know that the parade will be bigger and better than ever,? said Toni Richardson, Mardi Gras committee chair and director of sales and marketing at the Best Western Fort Walton Beachfront hotel. ?This is a very special year, because it?s our 10th parade, and the event has become a must-attend occasion for the community and for our winter visitors.?
It?s the only event of its kind on the island, and it draws float and walking entries from local businesses and organizations as well as some snowbird clubs.
Register a float on the Fort Walton Beach Chamber of Commerce website at fwbchamber.com or call 244-8191.
There will be beads and treats or spectators. Don Mardi Gras finery and get into the spirit.
Stick around after the parade and enjoy a festive block party sponsored by Helen Back on Amberjack Drive.
The former Los Panchos building will be the venue for the Abita block party noon-3 p.m., which has an entry fee via a $30 armband.
The armband includes beer sampling of Abita products, food samples from Stinky?s Fish Camp and Premier Beverage featured products and New Red Bull products.
There will be an Abita root beer station free for kids under age 16.
At Helen back, starting at noon, there will be live performance by Blues Brothers, drink specials with Premier Beverage and Red Bull and Abita on tap.
Also for children, Emerald Coast Wildlife will be on hand, as well as a kids play zone.
Abita?s Mardi Gras Parade on the Island is sponsored by Abita Brewing Company, Helen Back, and the Greater Fort Walton Beach Chamber of Commerce and its annual sponsors, Apex Broadcasting, the City of Fort Walton Beach, Cox, Cumulus Broadcasting, the Emerald Coast Tourist Development Council, FastSigns, Fort Walton Beach Medical Center, Image Printing and Digital Services, Northwest Florida Daily News, Northwest Florida Regional Airport, ResortQuest by Wyndham Vacation Rentals, Southern Vacation Rentals, and White-Wilson Medical Center.
