According to the CDC, about 1 in 5 women have been raped at some point in their lives:

http://www.cdc.gov/ViolencePrevention/pdf/NISVS_Report2010-a.pdf (Go to page 18)

I want to influence the discussion as little as possible, so I'll try to put my question as simply as I can: I find it almost impossible to believe that one out of every ten people I meet has experienced an event as soul-scarring as rape.? How could this be/what am I missing?

Anonymous #2

they're probably referring to rape in the all encompassing manner including date rape, got drunk and woke up regretting sleeping with some guy, etc.

I bet alot of these instances happen to children. There are alot of sick fucks out there who do horrible things.

Not sure if molestation counts but unfortunately this happens with small children

"got drunk and woke up regretting sleeping with some guy"

That isnt rape?? That is just a bad decision

From p. 17 of the report:

"Rape is defined as any completed or attempted unwanted vaginal (for women), oral, or anal penetration through the use of physical force (such as being pinned or held down, or by the use of violence) or threats to physically harm and includes times when the victim was drunk, high, drugged, or passed out and unable to consent. Rape is separated into three types, completed forced penetration, attempted forced penetration, and completed alcohol or drug facilitated penetration."

That's pretty much the definition of rape most people adhere to.? It might include date rape, but doesn't include waking up with regret.

That makes sense.? It's "lifetime occurrence of rape", which would include being raped as a child.? But say half of these rape instances occur in childhood (which would make the numbers much more believable) - I find it even more unbelievable to learn that 1 in 10 women (or 1 in 20 people) were fucking molested as children.

How can a woman get raped by getting drunk and sleeping with some guy???

Date rape is one thing but waking up knowing you willingly had sex with some guy is just a stupid decision on their part.

If you consent than change your mind after the fact it's not rape. This tends to happen all the time.

Sadly, OP, you probably know a few people who have been raped.? If by some statistical miracle you don't, consider yourself (and those around you) lucky.

Sadly, this topic is a lot more widespread than anyone will admit.? THis is not a topic men will admit to or women will come forward about.? Most of the time when women come forward they're made to be the troublemaker - and are often ridiculed and berated.

SO yeah, that shit sucks.? Rapists suck and should be chemically castrated (which they do now, and should do every time here in the US, especially to pedophiles)

I take that to mean sex happened after some drinks and regret happened the next morning.

In my mind, that is not rape at all.

Truth in your second sentence.? A valid distinction.? However:

(a) Women willingly sleeps with man, wakes up, regrets it, calls rape
(b) Man rapes woman, women cries rape, man says it was consensual
(c) Man rapes woman, woman never says anything to anyone ever

Sadly, (a) happens much less frequently than (b).
Sadly, (a) happens WAY less frequently than (c).
Sadly, (c) happens all the fucking time, and nobody ever knows about it.

I suspect that many more women than 1 in 5 have been sexually assaulted.? Almost every woman I know has been sexually abused or assaulted at some point in their lives.? My mother, my step mother, at least 4 of my female friends, some of their mothers...

I think men frequently do not understand the emotional and societal pressures that prevent women from telling others that they have been sexually assaulted.

I don't know any women who have been raped or sexually assaulted to my knowledge. It makes it hard to buy the 1 in 5 statistic, but statistically I realize not only do I have a relatively small n, but also a heavy selection bias. Not to mention the stigma associated with rape and the very valid reasons for non-disclosure to even a close friend.

Also rape is not as necessarily "soul scarring" as you might think. Certain kinds of rape can be very damaging, but I don't think all rape carries long term consequences that could be described as soul scarring. Especially in cases with appropriate social and psychological support (sadly not the norm.) I think rape can be dealt with effectively by a victim as easily as any other traumatic life event.

That being said denial and the social equivalents of gaslighting (social denial of the problem including inaction, blaming the victim, etc.) can be extremely traumatic no matter what the event.

It's actually more of a wonder that the suicide rate is not much higher amongst women in countries where rape is ignored and victims are blamed (i.e. countries that lack appropriate social and emotional support) assuming a 1 in 5 rape statistic (in the US--I'd imagine it is higher in the countries we are talking about) given the already much higher incidence and pre-disposition to serious mood disorders in the female population.

the FBI says there were 88,000 reported rapes last year, that 60% of rapes go
unreported, that would bring us to somewhere just under 200,000 per year,
many of the unreported rapes are of course 'date rape' and the 'morning
regret', many are also prostitutes, strippers and others that do in
actuality put themselves into situations that make it easier, not that this
is some kind of excuse for the rapist, just that it becomes questionable.

according to some sources 1 in 4 women will be raped in the time they're in
college, there's around 10 million female college students, any selected
year that would mean that 2.5 million women are raped on college campuses
each year and if 60% of those are unreported then that's still over 1
million per year reported, if even 10% of these allegations lead to an
arrest and conviction wouldnt that lead to a much higher number of people in
prison or the sex offender registry here in the US?

there's really far too much bullshit surrounding the claims to even have a
picture remotely close to reality on this, the CDC numbers as many others
are grossly exaggerated, the sample size of the CDC survey being 16000, 9000
of which were women, and it was a survey, not a study based on actual
reports, a push button phone survey. if you read the paper you'll find that
they also see 'lying to someone to convince them to have sex' is also rape,
false promises such as a part in? a movie, false promises of marriage,
claims of love that arent true, hell, simply asking a girl to show her tits
are apparently considered sexual assault in this shit. it's no wonder the
CDC now claims that 20% of women are victims of rape

I think I'll stick with what the FBI says, they compile the actual crime
reports and dont bother with calling to survey people on crime

I agree, 1 in 4 women being raped is a exaggeration. If even a small percentage of these rapes were reported to law enforcement, the justice system would be overwhelmed.

Your statistical analysis is flawed. The 1 in 4 women stat could be for a range of one semester to eight years. You seem to have figured it for one year.

The same goes for the 1 in 5 over a lifetime. That don't mean 1 in 5 every year.
