Mayor "Not Pleased" About Reduction in CPS' Bond Rating

Rahm Emanuel speaks at an appearance at Tarkington School of Excellence on Tuesday, Sept. 11, 2012.

Mayor Rahm Emanuel said Friday that he was "not pleased"?with a decision by Moody's Investor Service to again drop the Board of Education's bond rating but said his actions were a matter of priorities.

?Kids are getting an additional hour and 15 minutes today and I had to take care of that first,"?the mayor said Friday. "I could not put the fiscal challenges ahead of our educational challenges."

The bond-rating agency's action comes after a more than week-long Chicago Teachers' Union strike.

On Thursday, Moody's reduced CPS' debt to A2, reflecting "a weakened financial profile."?The company said it thinks "the district will be hard-pressed to make the budget adjustments necessary" to close an approximate $1 billion budget gap for fiscal 2014. The rating applies to $6.4 billion in debt.

Chicago Public Schools said in a statement that it is making "tough decisions" to fix finances without sacrificing children's educations. CPS said it has cut more than $500 million over the past year.

"In the last 16 months, we?ve taken 16 percent of cost out of the system. We have more work to do. Yes, we had two [bond rating drops]. But, I want to repeat: this contract is cheaper and more frugal by 40 percent while our kids educational time has increased by 30 percent,"?said Emanuel.

In July, Moody's separately downgraded Chicago Public Schools' bond rating outlook from stable to negative.

Teachers and CPS officials agreed on a contract earlier this month.

Pronova and Takeda Announce NDA Approval for Lotriga in Japan

Pronova BioPharma ASA and Takeda Pharmaceutical Co. Ltd. today announced that the Japanese Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare has approved a New Drug Application (NDA) of Lotriga granular capsule 2g (generic name: omega-3-acid ethyl esters 90) for the treatment of hyperlipidemia.

Lotriga, discovered by Pronova, is the omega 3-derived prescription drug containing highly concentrated and purified EPA-E (eicosapentaenoic acid ethyl ester) and DHA-E (docosahexaenoic acid ethyl ester). It is already on the market in 60 countries including the U.S. and Europe. In 2005, Takeda and Pronova entered into a License- and Supply Agreement in which Takeda was granted the exclusive development and marketing right to this product in Japan. Lotriga will be the first prescription medicine in Japan that contains both EPA-E and DHA-E.

The results of the phase 3 clinical trial conducted in Japan upon submission, has evaluated the efficacy and safety of Lotriga for Japanese patients with hypertriglyceridemia [baseline triglyceride level, 150 to 750 mg/dL], in comparison with an active comparator EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid, 0.6g thrice daily, recommended daily dose) product. The trial demonstrated that 2g (once daily) of Lotriga was equally, and 4g (2g twice daily) of Lotriga was statistically superior to the EPA, in lowering the percent change from baseline in triglycerides. Lotriga was safe and well tolerated, with a safety profile comparable to the EPA.

Upon approval, Pronova and Takeda are confident that Lotriga will be able to contribute to patients living with hyperlipidemia in Japan as a valuable new treatment option.

Japanese Brand Name: Lotriga 2g

Generic Name: omega-3-acid ethyl esters 90

Dosage and Administration: Usually, for adults, 2g of Omega-3-acid ethyl esters is orally administered immediately after meals once a day. In the case of high triglyceride level, the dose can be increased 2g twice a day.

Things you should know about bad credit loans - Financial News ...

Bad credit situations are common these days. Many people have been affected by the global economic crisis making getting a loan difficult. Banks are much stricter about lending so many seek to obtain bad credit loans. You might be desperate, but before you act it is important to get some facts about bad credit loans. Here are some things you should be aware of before you borrow.

High Interest Rates

Institutions that offer bad credit loans often charge high interest rates sometimes even over 100%. It is important to read and understand all the terms and conditions on a bad credit loan before you borrow. If you don?t think you can make the payments you are better off looking for help somewhere else.

Scam artists

There are many fake loan institutions out there looking to take advantage of people. They appear very legitimate, but they are just waiting to steal your money from you. Avoid any lender that asks for a ?security deposit? or ?processing payment? or any other type of up front payment before you get the loan. They will quite simply take your money, and you will never hear from them again.

Other options

There are ways to get a loan though even if you have bad credit. For example:

You borrow against the value of your home or the equity you have paid towards your mortgage. Remember that if you can?t pay the loan the bank takes over ownership of your house.

These are organizations similar to banks but the owners are members of the credit union. All the members work in the same industry or live in the same geographic area. Credit unions are more flexible in their lending criteria as compared to banks.

It doesn?t hurt to ask a family member or friend for a loan. Write up an official contract agreeable to both parties. If you do it right you will both feel more comfortable.

Ask someone to co-sign on a bank loan with you. You are much more likely to get approved for a bank loan if someone with good credit is willing to sign the loan contract with you.

These are online sites that connect individual lenders with borrowers. Check out sites like www.prosper.com. The interest rates here are usually reasonable, but you have to sell yourself and transmit confidence to the lender.

Get a job

Your chances of being approved for a loan are much higher if you can show that you are employed. This applies to all types of bad credit loans. Unemployment makes lenders nervous and less likely to approve you for a loan.

Many people suffering from bad credit are in complicated situations, but there are options. If you present yourself as informed and prepared to make payments you are more likely to get approved for a bad credit loan.

Kristina's World: Recovery from Childhood Stroke - BodiMojo

On March 23, 2010, Kristina came home from school with a splitting headache, nausea and a limp. She was 14 years old. She was living in a busy household of six, including a younger sister (age 10) newly diagnosed with Type I diabetes. No one seemed to take her complaints seriously.

Here was a young teen girl at the top of the heap in middle school, a full schedule, and on club teams for hockey and soccer. She called her mom and told that she did not feel well and so she stayed home. Pretty reasonable. Her parents went about their workdays and shuttling her siblings to their afterschool sports. All the while Kristina was growing more miserable.

Later, her older sister came home from high school to find Kristina sprawled the bathroom floor near vomit. Kristina remarked, ?My sister?s first comment was ?what trouble have you been in today?? Like had I been drinking or something. Me!?? Leave it to a big sis to think the worst, but she was clearly worried for Kristina.

Once her mom ? a nurse ? came home she was rushed to local emergency room. The ER doctor ruled out any substances but discovered an unusually high white blood cell count ? which often means the body is fighting an infection. Two days later, at The Children?s Hospital in Boston, the doctors determined that Kristina had suffered a stroke.

We don?t often think that a child is susceptible to a stroke or heart disease. But many children are affected all over the world by various types of heart diseases. In some cases, the disease may be due to a congenital problem; to environmental circumstances like malnutrition; or to a specific condition, such as sickle cell disease.

Sometimes there is a news story about baby with a hole in his or her heart and the miraculous surgery that followed. But rarely do we hear about children and heart disease. Typically, heart disease is associated with older people or those with poor lifestyle habits, such as smoking or being overweight.

This Saturday, September 29, 2012, marks World Heart Day by the World Heart Federation (see infographic). The day is devoted to raising awareness about heart disease in children and women all over the globe. (#worldheartday)

According to The World Heart Federation the warning signs of stroke are:

  • Sudden numbness or weakness of the face, arm or leg, especially on one side of the body
  • Sudden confusion, trouble speaking or understanding
  • Sudden trouble seeing in one or both eyes
  • Sudden trouble walking, dizziness, loss of balance or coordination
  • Sudden severe headache with no known cause

Fortunately, children who suffer a stroke often recover the use of their arms and legs, and their ability to speak ? although the course of healing is different for each child.

What transpired for Kristina next was truly a life challenge. For 18 months Kristina received physical and occupational therapy. She had to learn to walk again. Her recovery focused on strength, balance, mobility and handwriting. Her parents had her repeat the 8th grade, so she could recover as best as possible.? Imagine watching your best friends move on to high school and you can?t?

?Emotionally, it was very hard,? recalls Kristina. ?Not being able to be with my friends in school, or to play club hockey and soccer? I thought to myself, I?ll never be the same again.?

Kristina, now in 10th grade is back playing sports big time ? in fact, when interviewed for this article she was at home recovering from a concussion received at a recent ice hockey game (a whole other topic for teens).

?What got me through this was my family and my friends. They were so supportive.? Sometimes, my leg still gives out and I feel weak. My mom reminds me that there was a time when I couldn?t walk at all. That helps. But I still worry sometimes.?

Another wonderful inspiration for Kristina was New England?s Patriot football linebacker, Tedy Bruschi, who suffered a stroke on the football field in 2005. Kristina met him and she was invited to be a member of Tedy?s Team ? a group of runners who raise money for the American Stroke Association. She watched him finish his first marathon just last year with his wife, Heidi. Tedy met Kristina when she had her stroke and has encouraged her to work hard. He told her it will pay off as it did for him.

Kristina has turned her struggle into inspiration. She is now a patient advocate and speaks for the American Heart Association.?She visits middle schools to raise awareness about stroke, heart disease and heart health. A few weekends ago she participated in her first Boston Heart Walk. In a matter of just 2 weeks she raised over $4000!? Kristina, her nana, mom and friends walked with her, as did local news commentator Jonathan Hall and his daughter, Maddy, a?school friend of hers.?Everyday she feels more and more confident. Here?s how Kristina answered other questions about her experience.

What was it like to put a pair of hockey skates on after the stroke?

?When I first got on the ice it was all I could do. It was so overwhelming.? Everything. The fact of what happened ? I had been on a team that was trying out for nationals. And here I was.? Starting over. I just cried. Slowly I learned to do a few strides and to learn to stop again.?

Are there any funny moments that you remember about your recovery?

?My mom just reminded me of something. That when I was in the hospital I wrote to Justin Bieber.? The letter was returned. I guess I wrote the wrong address!?

Has this experience affected how you think about your future?

?This has opened so many doors for me and I?ve learned so much knowledge about children?s heart disease. To be able to speak at schools and events sponsored by the American Heart Association is incredible. ?Next month I?m speaking to a conference with hundreds of school health and physical education teachers from across the state. It?s amazing.?

Do you have thoughts about what you want to do later?

?When I was in the hospital and at rehab all the therapists and nurses were so nice. I was also able to see special needs teachers as they work with other children affected by heart disease. I hadn?t realized that babies could have heart disease or even have a stroke in the womb. That was just incredible to learn about. This has opened me up to so many possibilities for a career. It?s been inspiring. But first, I?m going to create a ?Kristina?s Team? to raise awareness about stroke and heart health.?

What do you want other teens to know? What?s the take away message?

?When I speak at middle schools, I tell the kids that it?s important to know that a stroke can happen to anyone. That it?s important to stay healthy and exercise and to know the symptoms of heart disease; recognize it and act fast if you think someone may be suffering from a stroke.?

Watch the video to see Kristina?s recovery process.? Share her story with friends. Open other people?s minds ? and hearts ?? to the reality of heart disease.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) ? Authorities in Tennessee issued a statewide Amber Alert on Friday for two children missing since their home was destroyed by an intense fire.

The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation sent out the alert late Friday evening after investigators spent a fifth day trying to determine if there were any remains of the children in the fire debris.

The children, identified as 9-year old Chloie Leverette and 7-year old Gage Daniel, were living with their grandparents at the house that burned Sunday night and early Monday.

"I don't know what to think. I don't know what to think," Christopher Daniel, Gage's father, told The Associated Press in a brief telephone interview. "They don't think that they burned up in the fire, the way I took it they don't."

Daniel, his voice breaking, said he had no idea what could have happened to the children, who have not been seen since before the fire Sunday evening.

Two bodies tentatively identified as 72-year-old Leon "Bubba" McClaran and his wife, 70-year-old Molli McClaran, were recovered Monday and have been sent to the Nashville medical examiner's office for autopsy. She was the children's maternal grandmother, he their step-grandfather.

TBI spokeswoman Kristin Helm said the alert has not been sent to other states.

"We don't know where they are," Helm said. "We don't have any indication that they're in another state."

Multiple fire experts had processed the debris of the incinerated farmhouse and no trace of the children was found, the TBI said in a news release announcing the alert.

On Wednesday, when officials still had not found evidence of the children's remains in the debris, TBI issued an endangered child alert.

Helm said the TBI does not have any direct evidence that the children are victims of foul play. She said there are no persons of interest in the case and that investigators are following all leads, but would not elaborate.

Forensic teams from Middle Tennessee State University and the University of Tennessee at Knoxville were brought in to help in the search.

Forensic anthropologist Steven A. Symes, who formerly worked in the medical examiner's office for Shelby County, said it was a smart decision for authorities to bring in these teams because they have the expertise.

"It just takes some screening and some close looking and understanding that a piece of drywall and piece of skull bone burned look about identical," he said.

Symes said the recovery of remains from fires has advanced as the forensic anthropology field grows, but he acknowledged it is still a slow process. He said the length of time to recover remains depends on the scene and how detailed the search is.

"Unfortunately sometimes a case that you least expect to be suspicious or difficult turns into that type of case," he said.

Christopher Garrett, a spokesman for the State Fire Marshal's office, said he did not have any information on a cause of the fire.

NASA rover finds old streambed on Martian surface

ScienceDaily (Sep. 27, 2012) ? NASA's Curiosity rover mission has found evidence a stream once ran vigorously across the area on Mars where the rover is driving. There is earlier evidence for the presence of water on Mars, but this evidence -- images of rocks containing ancient streambed gravels -- is the first of its kind.

Scientists are studying the images of stones cemented into a layer of conglomerate rock. The sizes and shapes of stones offer clues to the speed and distance of a long-ago stream's flow.

"From the size of gravels it carried, we can interpret the water was moving about 3 feet per second, with a depth somewhere between ankle and hip deep," said Curiosity science co-investigator William Dietrich of the University of California, Berkeley. "Plenty of papers have been written about channels on Mars with many different hypotheses about the flows in them. This is the first time we're actually seeing water-transported gravel on Mars. This is a transition from speculation about the size of streambed material to direct observation of it."

The finding site lies between the north rim of Gale Crater and the base of Mount Sharp, a mountain inside the crater. Earlier imaging of the region from Mars orbit allows for additional interpretation of the gravel-bearing conglomerate. The imagery shows an alluvial fan of material washed down from the rim, streaked by many apparent channels, sitting uphill of the new finds.

The rounded shape of some stones in the conglomerate indicates long-distance transport from above the rim, where a channel named Peace Vallis feeds into the alluvial fan. The abundance of channels in the fan between the rim and conglomerate suggests flows continued or repeated over a long time, not just once or for a few years.

The discovery comes from examining two outcrops, called "Hottah" and "Link," with the telephoto capability of Curiosity's mast camera during the first 40 days after landing. Those observations followed up on earlier hints from another outcrop, which was exposed by thruster exhaust as Curiosity, the Mars Science Laboratory Project's rover, touched down.

"Hottah looks like someone jack-hammered up a slab of city sidewalk, but it's really a tilted block of an ancient streambed," said Mars Science Laboratory Project Scientist John Grotzinger of the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena.

The gravels in conglomerates at both outcrops range in size from a grain of sand to a golf ball. Some are angular, but many are rounded.

"The shapes tell you they were transported and the sizes tell you they couldn't be transported by wind. They were transported by water flow," said Curiosity science co-investigator Rebecca Williams of the Planetary Science Institute in Tucson, Ariz.

The science team may use Curiosity to learn the elemental composition of the material, which holds the conglomerate together, revealing more characteristics of the wet environment that formed these deposits. The stones in the conglomerate provide a sampling from above the crater rim, so the team may also examine several of them to learn about broader regional geology.

The slope of Mount Sharp in Gale Crater remains the rover's main destination. Clay and sulfate minerals detected there from orbit can be good preservers of carbon-based organic chemicals that are potential ingredients for life.

"A long-flowing stream can be a habitable environment," said Grotzinger. "It is not our top choice as an environment for preservation of organics, though. We're still going to Mount Sharp, but this is insurance that we have already found our first potentially habitable environment."

During the two-year prime mission of the Mars Science Laboratory, esearchers will use Curiosity's 10 instruments to investigate whether areas in Gale Crater have ever offered environmental conditions favorable for microbial life.

NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, a division of Caltech, built Curiosity and manages the Mars Science Laboratory Project for NASA's Science Mission Directorate, Washington.

Want Some Taste With That Ice Cream?Your Health Journal | Your ...

From a local NBC affiliate?..

Nonfat cheese that tastes like plastic. Low-calorie soda that leaves a bitter aftertaste. Sugar-free brownies that crumble like Styrofoam.

Dieters have learned an important lesson: When you take the fat and calories out of your favorite treats, you sometimes have to say goodbye to the taste too.

But snack brands like Dreyer?s/Edy?s ice cream, Hershey?s chocolate and Lay?s potato chips are trying to solve this age-old dieter?s dilemma by rolling out some mid-calorie goodies that have more fat and calories than the snacks of earlier diet crazes but less than the original versions. They?re following the lead of soda companies like Pepsi and Dr Pepper that introduced mid-calorie drinks last year.

It?s hard to isolate sales of mid-calorie snacks since they also usually have reduced fat, or other healthy attributes like reduced sodium. But sales of all foods and drinks in which the amount of things like fat, sugar, salt, carbohydrates have been actively reduced during production have risen 16 percent to $51.72 billion since 2006, according to research firm Euromonitor International.

The mid-calorie trend is hitting at a time when companies that make sugary and salty treats are being blamed for the country?s expanding waistlines. The problem is that the same things that make snacks taste good ? sugar, salt, calories ? also make them fattening. And many Americans don?t want to sacrifice taste at snack time. Shaving a few calories enables companies to market their cakes, cookies and chips as healthier without the stigma of bad taste that goes along with some low-fat products.

It?s just the kind of marketing that might attract Monica Olivas. She says she wants to lead a healthy lifestyle, including curbing her fat and caloric intake as much as possible. But most low-fat foods just don?t appeal to her.

?Sometimes companies go too far and take out all the fat ? and all the flavor,? says Olivas, a 29-year-old recruiter from Pico Rivera, Calif.

Matrix One drops to $60

Well, the Matrix One isn't becoming any more attractive spec-wise as the days pass, but Direct Merchandise Marketing believes they can keep up with the low-priced big boys by under-cutting them even further. If a $90 retail sticker wasn't enough to convince you that the A8-powered ICS slab deserved your attention, maybe a drop to $60 will change your tune. The 7-inch WVGA tablet is now an impressively thrifty $59.99, though, after tax and shipping the total tops $70. Still, its impossible to deny its bargain value.

American Threatens Legal Action Against Pilots ? CBS Dallas / Fort ...

FORT WORTH (CBSDFW.COM) ? American Airlines has sent a letter to the Allied Pilots Association, threatening legal action if the company is forced to continue cancellations due to an increase in pilot sick calls and maintenance requests.

The airline would not disclose the entire letter sent to the pilots union, but released a statement about it, which reads: ?We do not want to pursue a legal remedy, but we will be left with little alternative if APA does not take action to stop those pilots who are intentionally harming the operation. American?s operations have continued to suffer for more than a week now, and we must take the appropriate steps to ensure our customers and our airline are protected.?

It goes on to say, ?The recent conduct by some of our pilots is inflicting economic damage on the company, frustrating and alienating our customers, and driving unnecessary work and significant stress for other employees. Our goal remains for all of us to put this recent behavior behind us and turn to the critical task of operating a more efficient, competitive airline in the interests of all economic stakeholders, including our pilots, and begin the joint task of finding common ground for a new pilot agreement.?

American has blamed the pilots for intentionally causing a slow down in operations, while the pilots union denies any organized effort to impact operations.

Last week, American apologized to its customers and announced it would be proactively cancelling up to two percent of its flights through October.

Meanwhile, earlier in the day, the Allied Pilots Board of Directors met to reaffirm their decision to enter new contract talks with American. They spent about five hours behind closed doors to strategize for those sessions. They?ll meet again all day Thursday and Friday.

A source in the Allied Pilots Association tells CBS 11 that American Airline?s new letter to the union threatening legal action will hurt efforts to re-engage in contract negotiations.

It was Monday of this week when American told the union it wanted to re-engage in those talks.

The pilots union is in the process of asking its members to vote to go on strike.? That ends next Wednesday, Octover 3rd.

While the pilots can?t legally strike, it would certainly continue to draw another line in the sand.

Finally, today the airline confirmed that nearly 16-hundred maintenance employees will accept its ?early out? offer.

Because that number is so high, American says it will substantially reduce the number of forced losses. The airline isn?t sure what the final number of losses will be, but said most of the moves will start in December.

Time Management & Productivity Pro Laura Stack Looks at - PRLog

?

PRLog (Press Release) - Sep 25, 2012 -
DENVER, Colorado, September 24, 2012 ? Some employees are better at looking the part than actually fulfilling their roles. In her latest blog titled ?Unstylish Efficiency: On Delivering Substance Over Style,? time management and productivity expert Laura Stack takes issue with those employees who work overtime to create the appearance of accomplishment, but fall short in actual productivity.

Stack likens the phenomenon to Billy Crystal?s iconic ?Fernando? character from SNL. Modeled after Fernando Lamas, Crystal?s Fernando hosted a superficial celebrity interview show, in which he often exclaimed, ?It is better to look good than to feel good,? and he told every guest, ?You look marvelous.?

According to Stack, Fernando captured the nonsensical ?style over substance? attitude that doesn?t work for very long if results aren?t being delivered.

In fact, Stack says that beyond a certain basic level, style doesn?t matter one bit if no results are delivered at the end of the day. ?

?If you let style dominate your thinking, you?ll eventually be revealed as the hollow shell you are and may very well find yourself on an express elevator to the ground floor,? Stack says. ?Even in the fashion industry where style seems to reign supreme, only results really matter.?

Stack says that only a laser-like focus on maximizing workplace productivity is going to guarantee the results that matter. Rather than wasting time developing a competent disguise, Stack tells readers to hone their time management skills, improve their abilities to block distractions, and prioritize task lists and schedules.

?Sure, you need to look and act professional at all times and present a personable front,? Stack says. ?But it?s more important to do everything humanly possible to meet and ideally beat your deadlines and serve up the best-quality results you can.

?Even when the final goal seems near at hand, don?t slow down! Instead, accelerate! Refuse to slack off until you?ve passed your goal.?

Stack advises those in management positions to lead with authority. A results-oriented attitude becomes even more essential to those responsible for an entire team?s results.

?Lead by example, working harder and more efficiently yourself,? Stack says. ?Nothing stimulates performance and drives team results like confidence and exuberance on the part of the leadership.?

Stack reinforces an ?honesty is the best policy? management approach. Leaders should strive to keep employees in the loop regarding company goals and the team?s role in moving the strategy forward. When milestones are reached, Stack encourages management to celebrate with staff.

?If you reward your people (and yourself) for performance, then you?re all more likely to produce the results you need, guaranteeing you avoid the bugbear of emphasizing style at the expense of substance,? Stack says.

?I?m not saying you can?t spice up your work with your own distinctive style and flair, but that can only take you so far, because spice alone doesn?t make a meal.?

Without the accompanying substance of productive results, Stack says style becomes no more than empty calories, leaving a bad taste in the mouths of everyone involved.

Gaming crowdfunding platform Gambitious is live | Games industry ...

A new crowdfunding platform built specifically for games developers is now live.

Gambitious is selling itself as ?the first professional crowdfunding platform exclusively dedicated to the video game industry?. Though it takes its inspiration from the likes of Kickstarter, it differs in that it provides for both fan donations and equity investment.

The launch lineup includes seven titles, with a project by Duke Nukem?s 3D Realms also on the way.

Equity investing options are currently only legal in the EU, but it is expected that the practice will be legalised in the US in 2013. Until then American backers will only be able to participate via donations.

?Crowdfunding is causing a great seismic shift in how projects get funded, however, there are risks of crash-and-burn due to unfulfilled projects and unfinished games,? Gambitious CEO Paul Hanraets explained.

?Unlike other crowdfunding platforms, Gambitious is designed specifically for the video game industry and ups the ante of developer credibility, investor engagement and development cycle understanding.?

The day one lineup is as follows:

? ????????? Candy Kids by Abstraction Games, The Netherlands
? ????????? Cosmic DJ by Gl33k, USA
? ????????? Mushroom Men by Red Fly Studio, USA ?
? ????????? Piratoons by Fishing Cactus, Belgium
? ????????? Super Micro Heroes by Mutant Games, Spain
? ????????? Tink by Mimimi Productions, Germany
? ????????? Train Fever by Urban Games, Switzerland

Upcoming projects include:

? ????????? Earth No More by 3D Realms, USA ?
? ????????? Pantzer Pets by Gamundo, The Netherlands
? ????????? Stronghold Crusaders 2 by Firefly Studios, England

AirPR Nabs $1M From 500 Startups, Matt Mullenweg To Help Startups Find Better PR

Screen shot 2012-09-25 at 3.48.21 PMWe in the media have a love-hate relationship with public relations firms and their professionals, with that relationship tending to skew heavily to the latter. Companies pour countless hours of blood, sweat and tears into building products and viable businesses, and when they're ready to tell those unique stories, they turn to PR. But as it stands right now, companies struggle to find the right PR match, and for the high cost, they don't get enough value in return. And this goes both ways.

Most biofuels are not 'green'

Most biofuels are not 'green' [ Back to EurekAlert! ] Public release date: 24-Sep-2012

New data on the biofuel ecobalance

This press release is available in German and French.

In recent years, the demand for supposedly environmentally friendly biofuels has increased significantly worldwide; on the one hand, this has resulted in the increased cultivation of so-called energy plants and, on the other hand, innovative production methods for the second generation of biofuels have been developed. Parallel to this, ecobalance experts have refined and developed methods for environmental assessment. Since biofuels stem predominantly from agricultural products, the, in part, controversial discussion about their environmental sustainability revolves principally around whether the production of biofuels is defensible from an ecological viewpoint or whether there are possible negative effects, for example on the supply of foodstuff in times of drought, or whether eutrophication of arable land occurs.

In order to be able to give a well-informed response, Empa, on behalf of the Department of Energy (BFA) and in collaboration with the research institute Agroscope Reckenholz-Tnikon (ART), and the Paul Scherrer Institute (PSI), has updated the ecobalance of numerous biofuels, including their production chains. Compared with the first worldwide ecobalance study of its kind in 2007, also carried out by Empa, the team, led by Empa researcher Rainer Zah, included both innovative energy plants and manufacturing processes and also updated assessment methods.

Fewer greenhouse gases and thus a different environmental impact

However, despite a more extensive data set and up-to-date methods, Empa comes to the same conclusion as the study in 2007: many biofuels based on agricultural products indeed do help to reduce the emission of greenhouse gases, but lead to other environmental pollution, such as too much acid in the soil and polluted (over-fertilised) lakes and rivers. "Most biofuels therefore just deflect the environmental impact: fewer greenhouse gases, thus more growth-related pollution for land used for agriculture", says Zah. This results in only a few biofuels having an overall better ecobalance than petrol, especially biogas from residues and waste materials, which depending on the source material impact on the environment up to half as much as petrol. And within the biofuel group, ethanol-based fuels tend to have a better ecobalance than those with an oil base; however, the results are very much dependent on the individual method of manufacture and the technology.

New findings on the effect of biofuels on greenhouse gases

However, the new methodology also allowed Zah and his colleagues to highlight the "weaknesses" of the earlier study. The researchers in 2007 underestimated the effects of changes to natural areas on the greenhouse gas balance, for example the deforestation of the rain forest. The current study now shows that biofuels from deforested areas usually emit more greenhouse gases than fossil fuels. This also applies to indirect land usage changes if existing agricultural land is used for the first time for biofuel production and, as a consequence, forested areas have to be cleared in order to maintain the existing foodstuff or animal feed production.

On the other hand, positive effects can be achieved if energy plant cultivation increases the carbon content of the soil, for example via the cultivation of oil palms on unused grazing land in Columbia or via jatropha plantations in India and eastern Africa, making deserted land arable again. "Despite this, you can't speak in general terms of Jatropha as being a 'wonder plant', as its ecobalance is very much dependent on the agricultural practices at the site in question and the land's previous use", says Zah. Each (new) biofuel must therefore be examined separately and in detail.

What should be heeded in terms of biofuel production?

Although the devil is in the detail, the new studies make it possible to make some general recommendations:

  • Clearing woodland and bush areas in order to develop energy plants is to be avoided; this worsens the greenhouse gas balance considerably, which has a distinctly greater impact on the environment.
  • If agricultural land is used for biofuel production, indirect change of land use should be avoided as far as possible, for example, by making it compulsory to provide evidence that any displaced production does not have indirect effects as a result of intensification.
  • The use of land and forestry residues such as straw, garden and timber waste for energy purposes is advantageous, but only if these are not used in other ways or if their extraction from their natural cycle does not reduce the fertility of the soil and the bio-diversity.

Foreplay For Men : How To Arouse A Man The Tantric Way ...

Prior to commencing massage on feet, dip the feet in mildly warm water, to which you can add some essential oil, e.g. In Canada in order to be recognized as sports massage therapist you must go through a certification process. This has adversely affected the health of people. After you?ve warmed the oil, start to give your partner a relaxing massage by placing your hands flat on the middle of their back. Reflexology massage therapy has always been one of the most popular massage therapy modalities sought in the treatment of a wide variety of illnesses.

Thai massage gives importance to an individual?s energy line. It has been shown that some form of touch whether it is light or actual massage is a great pain reliever. Ambiance of a place makes a huge difference to someone who?s come to take a good and a sensuous massage. In conclusion, many factors are involved when it comes to dealing with the loss of a limb. The next closest chair to the Inada Sogno with regards to massage coverage is the Panasonic 30007, which has approximately 450 sq.

By the virtue of the temperature of water, the feet experience freshness, blood flow in them gains speed and that affects whole body to become calmed down. In that way, clients may familiarize themselves with their bodies? needs so they can tell the masseur about their specific massage needs. But a treatment is a must it should be of conservative nature. Back injuries commonly occur since the muscles are not prepared for energetic, daily features. Massage therapy has several health benefits.

Like neuromuscular massage, acupressure is meant to help relieve painful symptoms and also works to bring balance to the body and mind. Always consult your doctor first. Reflexology can help you to relax and it can give you more energy if you are feeling tired. Opens micro-circulation what massage also does is open or dilate the blood vessels and by stretching them this enables nutrients to pass through more easily. This treatment allows them to regain their sport fast and they return on the track of game.

Pressure or strain may, however, activate a latent trigger point. Agencies such as the Commission on Massage Therapy Accreditation are able to fully accredit the online medical massage schools that offer career training that is of the best quality. At times a client is not comfortable to be completely nude, and it is always advisable to undress to your personal level of comfort. As the pain decreases, so should the visits. As we exercise, our bodies expend energy.

While massage has been most commonly regarded as simply a service to help you relax, there are actually numerous benefits that your body experiences. Having a good blood flow means that oxygen and other life saving nutrients are supplied to all the cells and waste materials are eliminated out of the body very effectively. Put the toe stone back in the water and pick out a cylindrical or rectangular stone. By using stretching and pressure, the muscle tissues are generally worked up and allow the stimulation of acupressure points. Unlike other careers that come with heavy work pressures, the massage therapy offers great mental peace.

By enrolling in an accredited massage therapy school not only will students obtain the skills for an exciting new career but also learn the skills needed to possibly start their own business. It stretches your connective tissues which support the muscles, thereby increasing your body?s flexibility. This is called self-treating and it is instinctive. Elderly people are most vulnerable to suffering from a stroke. Massage Therapy is so popular in the United States now that the number of visits to a massage therapist has risen from 91 million in 1999 to 136 million in 2003, probably even more in 2009.

The clients need to feel the actual service of the therapists before they can judge them in terms of their performance. As you continue your dog massage, proceed by pinching folds of skin in the loose areas on the back, stomach, and legs will help your dog?s circulation tremendously. To give a great breast massage, a little anatomical instruction may be useful. Some men and women might even ask for a free ten minute test to determine how well they perform. Now, start at his or her neck and the tops of their shoulders.

Bend the legs at the knees and put oil on the calves as well. Tantric massage is again, I must stress, not sex. Conventional massage can help the pain sufferer develop increased ranges of movement as well as providing long term pain relief from the original ailment. Not only do massage candles have anti-aging properties and health benefits for the skin, but they leave a long-lasting scent that can affect your mood in a positive way. With the proper training and drive for success, students will find that the career they desire is out there waiting for them.

>Massage London offers some great massage treatments for one and all. Alternating your strokes, gradually work down to your partner?s buttocks.
