Maryland has lost its appeal with the NCAA over the eligibility of Sam Cassell Jr.
?We?ve exhausted every option and made our best effort," Maryland coach Mark Turgeon said in a news release. "I?m very pleased with the work that our compliance staff put in on Sam?s behalf. Obviously, we?re very disappointed that he will be unable to attend the University of Maryland at this time and be a part of our basketball program. We will continue to support Sam and his family in any way that we can as they determine their next steps."
The NCAA told Maryland in the middle of August that Cassell was a non-qualifier because of several core courses he took during the 2010-11 school year at Notre Dame Prep in Fitchburg, Mass.
Maryland filed an initial waiver that was denied. The university then filed another appeal, which was denied during the last 24 hours, according to a source.
Several of Cassell?s teammates at Notre Dame Prep took the same courses that he did two years ago. Those players who were a year ahead of him began their Division I college careers last season as freshmen.
Now Cassell is faced with the prospect of finding a new school, enrolling as a non-qualifier and redshirting his freshman year. Atlantic Coast Conference schools do not allow non-qualifiers.
